Anger in Austria after politician brands Mohamed a 'child abuser'

A politician has described the prophet Mohamed as a "child abuser" and warned that Austria faces an "Islamic immigration tsunami" that will make half of the country Muslim within two decades.

Susanne Winter, a lawyer, is a member of Austria's conservative Freedom Party. Her smiling face on campaign placards in the southern city of Graz is accompanied by the slogans "no home for radical Islam" and "she hits the nail on the head".

Leaders of the country's Islamic groups said they could not rule out "violent protests" as a result of her remarks. The Foreign Ministry was reported to have issued an alert to its embassies in Islamic countries.

Mainstream parties distanced themselves from Ms Winter. Walter Ferk, a leading Social Democrat and deputy mayor of Graz, said her remarks were "pure racism and obvious discrimination against a community that has been recognised in Austria for many years". He pointed out that Graz had the smallest population of Muslims in Austria.

Ms Winter, 50, is a candidate for her party in this weekend's local elections in Graz. She told a rally of some 3,000 supporters on Sunday that Islam was a "totalitarian system" which deserved to be "chucked back to where it came from: on the other side of the Mediterranean".

Adding that Graz was threatened by what she described as "an Islamic immigration tsunami" she said half of Austria's population would be Muslim "within 20 to 30 years". She ended her speech with comments on Mohamed. Citing references to the religious leader consummating a marriage to a nine-year-old, she said: "By today's standards, Mohamed would be considered a child abuser."

On Monday, Ms Winter followed up her remarks. In an interview with the daily newspaper Osterreich, she said child abuse was "widespread among Islamic men" and that Mohamed had written the Koran during "attacks of epilepsy".

Her speech is reported to have received enthusiastic applause. Heinz-Christian Strache, the Freedom Party's deputy leader, is said to have clapped loudly as Ms Winter made her comments on Islam.

Speculation has begun that Ms Winter has made herself a target for Islamic extremists. Anas Schakfeh, president of Austria's Islamic community, said the mood among Muslims was furious. He said: "I aim for conciliation, but I cannot rule out the possibility of violent protests."

Omar al-Rawi, another Islamic spokesman said: "Islam-bashing has reached a level which is stomach-turning and makes one want to be sick."

They received support from non-Muslim politicians. A spokesman for the conservative People's Party said the remarks were an "unbelievable transgression which all democrats should condemn outright".

In the 2006 general election, the Freedom Party won 13 per cent of vote. At a rally on Sunday, the former party leaderJörg Haider, also made anti-Islamic remarks. He welcomed his supporters with the greeting "Grüss Gott" or "God bless you" before adding: "Fortunately, we are still able to say Grüss Gott rather than 'Allah is mighty'."

Over time, the filmmakers received over 300,000 pieces of hate mail, which Smith posted on his website. Among these were "two-and-a-half" death threats. Smith explained this in his movie An Evening with Kevin Smith: One of the letters was threatening to start with, then became more friendly further on. The Catholic League in particular attacked Disney and Miramax, the original distributors, for being anti-Catholic. The film was originally scheduled to come out in November of 1998, but was pushed back to November of 1999 in the hopes the controversy would die down. When that didn't work, Disney sold the film's distribution rights to Lions Gate Films.

When the film actually came out, Kevin Smith and his friend Bryan Johnson participated in a protest at the Sony Multiplex in Eatontown, New Jersey, carrying a sign which read "Dogma is Dogshit." A news crew captured the incident and broadcast an interview with a disguised Smith on News 12 New Jersey that can be found on Youtube.

Protests

There have been protesters at several movie theaters across the United States on opening weekend protesting the themes of the film, citing it as blasphemy and claiming that it shames both the Catholic Church, and Jesus Christ himself. More than 200 protesters also turned out in Athens, Greece to protest the film's release shortly before opening day. In Manila the movie was banned from all theaters and the set by the local MTRCB as an R18 movie for the Philippines.[30] In Pittsburgh, protesters also showed up at a special screening of the film the day before its widespread release.[31] Protests also occurred at the filming sites, but only a monk and a nun stood in a quiet protest at the Cannes premiere.[32] In Chennai, India, the film was banned for a two month period to appease local Christian and Muslim groups.[33]

Protests against the movie from religious communities began before the film had even finished production. The studio was expecting a backlash due to the controversies revolving around any media treatment of Christ (see dramatic portrayals of Jesus Christ), but the protests accompanying Last Temptation were unprecedented. Major religious leaders in the United States blasted the film in fiery sermons, and condemned its subject matter as pornographic.[citation needed]

On October 22, 1988, a French Catholic fundamentalist group launched molotov cocktails inside the Parisian Saint Michel movie theater to protest against the film. This terrorist attack injured thirteen people, four of whom were severely burned.[2]

In 1991, Albuquerque high school teacher, Joyce Briscoe, showed the film to gifted history students at La Cueva High School, raising a storm of controversy by parents and local Christian broadcaster KLYT.[citation needed]

In some countries, including Mexico and Chile, the film was not released for several years.[2]
