We have to gut budgets, because that's what adults to take responsibility for their actions, do. Childish people, just spend until they go broke, and then blame everyone else for their problems. Look at Greece. That's childish left-wing ideology at its best.

As for higher education, I agree with Trump. Not all people are cut out to be in higher education. We need to shift our focus, to a decentralized system, of trade schools as an alternative to higher education. I know dozens of people that have degrees, and are working crap jobs, because they either are simply not cut out for the type of job their degree gets them, or they simply don't like that job, or are just not willing to do it. They would have been much better served to learn a trade skill.

And lastly, we are not demonizing teachers, but rather teachers unions. The fact is, we spend more money per student, than nearly any other country on the face of the Earth, and our students are not coming out on top. It's pathetic to see countries like Slovakia and Czeck Rep, which spend a tiny fraction of education that we do, ranking almost 10 places higher on the OECD in math. What are we spending all this extra money on, if it doesn't get us results? The answer is teachers unions.
