After tragedies there is often a call for action any action- regardless of how ineffective it might be. This week Wayne LaPierre of the NRA made a speech in which he called for armed cops in schools and it was ridiculed by Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen-elect Chris Murphy of Connecticut. Blumenthal called it sadly and shamefully inadequate. Murphy called it revolting and tone-deaf. The New York Daily News called LaPierre the craziest man on Earth. Lets examine those accusations.

Among LaPierres remarks:
- We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, court houses, even sports stadiums are all protected by armed security.
- A gun in the hands of a Secret Service agent protecting the President isnt a bad word. A gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the United States isnt a bad word. And when you hear the glass breaking in your living room at 3 a.m. and call 911, you wont be able to pray hard enough for a gun in the hands of a good guy to get there fast enough to protect you.

So why is the idea of a gun good when its used to protect our President or our country or our police, but bad when its used to protect our children in their schools?[/INDENT]
Crazy, right?
Right now 30% of schools have a police officer. Police chiefs in both St. Louis and Cincinnati have called for training and arming teachers. President Bill Clinton passed a program called COPS in schools and it placed 2200 police officers in schools. You may have read that the attack at Columbine wasnt prevented by a police officer, but ask anyone blurting that out if Columbine would have been better off without a police officer present. Who knows how many more would have been killed without a cop present? Neil Gardner, the cop who was on duty at Columbine on the day of the attack thinks armed cops in schools is a good idea.
Are they all crazy?
Gun free zones? They are magnets for killers. John Lott writes:
With just one single exception, the attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns.
This from the NY Times:
Sandy Hook School is a gun-free zone.
Gun free zones mean gun free for those who would abide by the law only and map out a killing zone safe for those who would illegally conceal a weapon and commit murder.
That is crazy.
What is it that liberals want? They claim they want an assault-weapons ban, a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips, and background checks on all gun purchases. I have no objection to any of them but the fact is together they would not have prevented Newtown. Not at all. Nancy Lanzas weapons were legal. At close range her handguns were as lethal as the rifle. Adam Lanza might even have been able to buy one the 2000 assault rifles Eric Holders DOJ sent into Mexico. And any background check must also ask about mental illness in the household.
There were two things which could have prevented Newtown: responsible handling of weapons and early intervention of mental illness. Adam Lanza should never have had access to his mothers weapons. He was burgeoning sociopath and his mother knew it. In February Connecticut defeated Senate bill 452, known as AOT, which would have made it easier for Nancy Lanza to have her son treated. From CBS:
Had the AOT bill been passed, it would have given the state the right to institutionalize a person who is mentally ill for treatment if the state has enough evidence to believe that the person could be a danger to himself or the community.
The ACLU called it outrageously discriminatory. So on your way out Connecticut can thank its legislators and the ACLU for their part in Newtown. Apparently they believe the rights of sociopaths outweigh the lives of children.
Thats nuts.
Guns do not teach kids to kill. The NRA does not teach kids to kill. Hollywood does that. Video games do that. TV does that. Our culture worships movie stars- the same stars who profit enormously from the portrayal of violence and death. Tom Cruise will teach your kids how to kill in his new movie. There are websites glorifying Tarantino death scenes. They have desensitized us to death. They have cheapened life. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were big fans of Tarantino:
Ironically, in response to the tragedy in Newtown actress Marg Helgenberger said that one can only hope that many NRA members would be shot.
And its LaPierre whos crazy?
Cable trucks in the road doing repairs get an armed cop on traffic duty. Parades get armed cops. After hours school events get armed cops. Protests get armed cops. Why not schools? How to pay for it? For starters, we could redirect the billions thrown away now on green stimulus failures.
Guns are part of our Constitution. Theyre not going away. LaPierre only echoed what many have said for years- including President Clinton. LaPierre could have recommended peace on Earth and liberals would have savaged him for it simply because he is the NRA. They put the jerk in knee jerk. Next I expect well see our esteemed politicians blaming cars for drunk driving and pencils for misspelling.
Finally, Blumenthal stated that an armed guard at Columbine did not prevent the 1999 massacre.
Neither did a ban on assault weapons, Dick..

This from the NY Times:
As the nations leaders devise new gun control strategies following the Connecticut shooting, they should look for ways to strengthen state laws that govern the possession and use of firearms. In too many states, these laws are weak and, in some cases, seem almost designed to encourage violence.
Over the years, states have made it increasingly possible for almost any adult to carry a concealed handgun in public, including on college campuses, in churches and in state parks places where people tend to congregate in large numbers and where, in a rational world, guns should be strictly prohibited.

It has been confirmed that both Harris and Klebold were fans of Natural Born Killers. Prior to the massacre, they had used the initials NBK as their code. In a journal entry dated, April 10, 1998, Harris wrote When I go NBK and people say things like Oh, it was so tragic, or oh he is crazy! or It was so bloody, just because your mommy and daddy told you blood and violence is bad, you think its a fucking law of nature? Wrong, only science and math are true, everything, and I mean every fucking thing else is Man made. Before I leave this worthless place, I will kill whoever I deem unfit for anything at all, especially life. Harris also referred to April 20 as the holy April morning of NBK, and in an undated journal entry, Klebold (who was severely depressed) wrote Im stuck in humanity. Maybe going NBK w. Eric is the way to break free.[6] During one of the Basement Tapes found in Harris and Klebolds homes, the perpetrators mention how Hollywood will want to adapt their life story, and they debate on whether or not Steven Spielberg or Quentin Tarantino (who conceived the story for Natural Born Killers) are appropriate choices to direct the proposed film.
