Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate for governor of Virginia, didn't really mean it when he equated homosexuality with drug abuse and pornography as evils that "the government must restrain, punish, and deter."

A Virginia Model For a GOP Comeback?
He didn't really mean it when he decried a Supreme Court ruling invalidating a ban on contraception for married couples because it promoted "a view of liberty based on radical individualism."

Or when he urged that "every level of government should statutorily and procedurally prefer married couples over cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators," adding, "The cost of sin should fall on the sinner, not the taxpayer."

Or when he described "feminism" as one of the "real enemies of the traditional family" and criticized federal child-care programs because they "subsidize a dynamic new trend of working women and feminists that is ultimately detrimental to the family."

I don't care if he believes this, but don't be such a coward and now say he really didn't mean this now that he is running for governor.

Putting a different cover over a book still makes it the same book as before.

Wow! I'm in Va and I follow this stuff. I'm fairly positive he did not say "I didn't mean it". What I heard and read was "My views on these issues have changed".

That's basically the same thing. The guy was 34, married and had two children when he wrote that swill. My worldview has not changed that much since I was 34. It has been refined and strengthened a bit, but I am who I am. I think this guy is saying what is politically expedient. His views were wayyyyyyy out there for someone of 34 years. I doubt he is truthful, and I doubt he has changed that much.

We do tend to base our understanding on our own personal experiences as you did above. My experiences on the other hand have taught me just the opposite in many instances. I am, thankfully, no longer the man I was at 34 and my world view has expanded exponentially. So viewed by my understanding, 'I didn't mean it and my views have changed', can quite often mean two different things. Whether your view or my view applies in this instance wiil only become present over time.

Sounds a lot like Mitt Romney. :eusa_shhh:

Flip flopper? :eusa_eh:

Yeah he no longer thinks like he though that the women working for federal child-care programs are deviants riping apart the threads of the american faminly unit and as reckless feminists promoting a form of reckless individualism that takes women out of their natural place, the kitchen and bedroom, and allows them to work, be self sufficent, and seek a level of self satisfaction in their careers that is dangerous to society and relegates the role of men. Homosexuals must be PUNISHED!!! If you use a condom you're destroying the family unit!!! [/sarcasm]

Alot of what 34 year old McDonnell said is on par with a lot of what cultural conservatives still agree with today... homosexuals, feminists, liberals, etc are trying to destroy the american family unit, beliefs, values, society, etc.

I understand that but how does that make someone a flip flopper? I know a few people who used to think like that and have moderated or changed their opinions. Doesn't mean they "flip flopped" just means other factors have been introduced into their lives which causes them to reevaluate their old positions. It's called emotional and intellectual maturity.

I hope you noted the sarcasm "end sarcasm" in each of my posts regarding the flip flopper comment. It was poking at republicans labelling of Kerry as a flipflopper.

Yeah, but it must be asked if his moderation is for election purposes or is 34 year old McDonnell really changed. Its now become an issue that some voters are going to look at when they go to the poles and something that McDonnell has to convince some people is genuine change. I think that among moderates who were undecided the views he expressed could tip them into the Deeds camp.

I am not completely certain but it seems by the time that someone is in their mid thirties they would have a pretty well developed belief set and prejudices. I know people can change but fundamentally changing your belief set like McDonnell would have had to have done to be in line with many contemporary moderates seems to be a radical and sweeping change.

I know but I'm trying to be fair and give him the beneft of the doubt.
Sorry about the misinterpretation, my fault. I should have emphasised the flip flop as opposed to quote it. Wasn't meant to be sarcastic.
The problem for Deeds is this came out way to soon, more than enough time to mitigate the damage. I'm still looking closely at both men's positions, strengths and weaknesses. Deeds seems somewhat out of touch with Northern Va voters but that might just be his rural roots which don't necessarily play well up here in "yankee occupied" No VA.

So you think he's just full of shit? That people can't change? That what he believed when he was younger is the real deal and what he's saying now is just . . . bullshit for the public's ears?

Kind of like this guy, who the left is trying to repackage and pass off as clean?

He has a very checkered past. This is somebody who was involved in radical politics out in San Francisco, California. He was arrested during a demonstration/riot following the Rodney King verdict. And he said himself that he was radicalized in jail, that he found communism and anarchism. And then he started a pretty radical, kind of communist, socialist, utopian group that was supposed to end all racism though central planning. And then he decided that the real path the sort of progressive nirvana, was the this green jobs idea. I think its pretty instructive what his past is, I am not just trying to smear the guy, but I think it’s the same sort of philosophy, the idea that government ought to be reordering society in accordance with some utopian vision that failed with communism and socialism, and will fail with this green jobs idea. We are imposing a top-down vision.
