I doubt it would bring the debate to an end but the problem right now is a basic misunderstanding of the definition of Conservative in the political sense. Many confuse the political label of Conservative with the social label, but the two are completely unrelated. The social Conservative is one who prefers the Status-Quo over change in areas such as fashion, they wear "conservative" suits and ties, keep the same haristyle for decades and so on but this has nothing to do with political Conservatism.

A political Conservative is not someone who necessarily wants their government to stay the same, a Conservative understands that government is a necessary evil that has to be as big as it must be to perform it's assigned functions and not one agency or even employee more than that. A Conservative believes that people have the Right to live their lives as they see fit up to the point where doing so interferes with someone else's Right to do the same. They believed that we had certain Rights that were given to us by our Creator, who you think they believed that to be or who you think that is isn't relevant. The point is those Rights existed before and take priority when other men start telling us what our Rights are. They did this because they were all too aware that any government powerful enough to grant you Rights is also powerful enough to take them away. The beliefs of our Founding Fathers were new, different and yes even radical for their day but they were not Liberal, they were Conservative.

They are not unrelated since most political conservatives are social conservatives.

Aristotle was the first conservative who believed the individual and traditional family , not the state, should be the object of government.

The liberal puts the state first and the individual last.

Limited government means the individual and family becomes the center of society.
