The UK's tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate tax and pay the employees by bank transfer.


The proposal by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) stresses the need for employers to provide real-time information to the government so that it can monitor all payments and make a better assessment of whether the correct tax is being paid.

They already have deductions. What this is is a direct payment to the government for all the work you do, and then they return what they decide is appropriate. Would you be willing to send the state of Califirnia, which already issues IOUs to some of its contractors on occasion, your entire paycheck? If they run short of money, which is obviously not their fault, would you accept them not paying you until they had the cash?

Another thing to think about, this will amount to every worker in the country effectively lending the government money interest free. You get paid on Friday, and the government gets your check. They run it through their accounting department, deduct the money, and send it to you though a bank draft, the next Wednesday. Then you have to wait for that draft to clear, on Friday. How did you pay your bills during that week someone else was playing with your money?
