iPhone-maker Foxconn holds rallies after suicides - BostonHerald.com

The latest suicide — the 12th this year — occurred August 4 when a 22-year-old woman jumped from her factory dormitory in eastern Jiangsu province.

The rally Wednesday was taking place at Foxconn’s mammoth industrial park in Shenzhen, which employs 300,000 and where most of the suicides took place.

Foxconn, part of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., has built itself into the world’s largest contract maker of electronics, by delivering quality products on thin profit margins for its customers which include Apple Inc., Sony Corp., Dell Inc., Nokia Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Labor activists, however, say that success has come in part from driving workers hard by enforcing a rigid management style, operating a too-fast assembly line and requiring excessive overtime.

Chinese workers growing dissatisfaction with the low wages and pressure cooker working conditions that helped turn the country into an international manufacturing powerhouse.

Foxconn also announced two raises, more than doubling the basic worker pay to 2,000 yuan ($293) a month at the Shenzhen compound. But workers have to pass a three-month review period before they qualify for the second raise.

Right wingers made a mistake when they told me I made this up.

It's possible that Americans can compete with this, but how many would want to? That girl lived in a fucking "dormitory". Someone asked, "Do they even see the outside world"?

Corporations sure love that "communist/socialist" workforce. At $293 A MONTH, are the Chinese getting too "greedy"?

When the jobs move to China, they are no longer American jobs, they're Chinese. I though you knew this?

Also, we are not responsible for Chinese suicides any more than the Chinese would be for American suicides. Whatever the reason.

While certain Asian cultures are very good at inflicting guilt trips, you rdean, fail miserably.

Are you saying you're "fond"of "socialist/communist" workers? That sweatshops paid for with money from this country is a "good" thing?

From your own link:
However, Woo acknowledged that there will be challenges in preventing such tragedies among such a large work force. "No matter how hard we try, such thing will continue to happen," he said.
I'm willing to bet China had suicides even before this current version of Capitalism was used to support Chinese Communism. Probably for thousands of years before the evil White man stole the Americas from the Indians and Mexicans and forced them to open casinos, mow lawns and wash cars.

Mr Woo and myself seem understand human nature far better than you do rdean.

You do know that Apple is a hero corporation of the left, don't you? Just take a look at all your lefty friends and see how many of them have Macs, ipods, ipads, and iphones. Maybe if your buddies weren't so hung up on the imeme there would be a lot less people killing themselves at Foxconn.

That said, did you know that the suicide rate at Foxconn is about average? In other words, it is about the same suicide rate as any other major factory, even the ones here in the US. It is just making the news because people like you ignore facts and hype fear.

The corporate drivers in China will likely trigger another uprising.
How big will it be? I dunno.
The generation of workers entering the workforce now are much more spoiled and self centered than the previous generation.

Maybe they'll form Labor Unions and go on strike for higher wages which they'll get thus forcing the companies to ship the jobs overseas (That means to America).

Win!

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Its the policy of Obama and the fully Democratic controlled Congress to allow goods from "sweatshop" countries to be imported into our country with no penalty.

What are you bitching to us for about it? YOUR PARTY IS IN CHARGE. What happened to "changing" the things you didn't like?

Factories here get one or two suicides a month? Interesting.

Fully in charge?

The last two years of the Bush Administration, the Senate was 49 to 49 with two independents, yet right wingers insist the Democrats were in charge.

Today, without 60 votes, nothing happens. It's the way our system was "set up".

Democrats have it doubly hard.

Republicans are monolithic. 90% one race, mostly one religion, it's easy to get a consensus.

Democrats are white black brown red yellow men women young old christian muslim hindu atheist straight gay poor rich educated uneducated.

It's not like Democrats, who are so diverse, have "total control". This is just something ignorant right wingers say. it's not true

Has YOUR PARTY even proposed coming down on sweatshop imports/countries?
NO, they haven't. They're too busy trying to pass more failed jobs bills, and more bailouts for unions, banks, and wall street. Until they do don't bitch about Republicans blocking anything.

If your party of radicals stopped trying to ram through bills designed to destroy our economy and actually focused on some real problems (like the one in your OP!) then you might be pleasantly surprised to see real bi-partisan support.

How many of the factories here employ 300,000 people?

I would guess none. But look at the "big picture".

What are the causes of suicide? The number one, of course, is depression. But take a look at the reasons behind that depression:

Poor health
Stress
Mental illness
Bankruptcy
Someone who is intimidated

Considering this is a fairly "new" factory, presumably the people were "screened" before being hired. There are a billion people after all, plenty to choose from.

People are living in "dormitories".

And they have jobs.

Salaries were "doubled" to 293 dollars a month. How many companies "double" their employees salaries?

From our experience, you would expect the suicide rate to be low. Job, money, place to live.

But once you ask and get answers for:

How much work?

How much money?

What kind of place to live?

Answer those and you answer the "suicide" rate.

You're so full of shit it's not funny. TARP came from Bush and the Republicans, probably the only thing they did that kind of worked. Republicans are a failed party with failed policies. Trying to blame Democrats but they are merely trying to pull one over on the American people. Even you can't possibly believe your own BS.

Democrats "designed" bills to destroy the enonomy? That's too funny for words. The real "design" was the Republicans ripping off the Middle Class. When was the last time you heard a Republican politition say the words "Middle Class"?

Jesus, you can't even get your lies straight. TARP came from a Democratic controlled Congress, not "the Republicans", and signed into law by lame-duck Bush. Also note that McCain and Obama BOTH voted YES so laying it on Bush is just idiotic.

And yes, every bill the Democrats have passed and signed by Obama have been designed to further destroy our economy. Everytime these bills are introduced you have conservatives, and anyone else being honest, saying it will do nothing but hurt the economy further, and what has happened? The economy has gotten worse. More jobs lost, higher unemployment, and there is no end in sight. NONE of the bills passed have helped us as was promised by the Hussein and the left-wingnuts. Idiots like you may actually be dumb enough to believe these bills are designed to "fix" the economy, but the Hussein, Pelosi, and Reid all know exactly what the results will be.

Unless of course you want to argue that they too were just too dumb to understand these bills would only sink our economy.

Depends on how big the factory is. Remember, Google is your friend, but don't let the facts stop you from making a fool of yourself.

If you show me a factory in the US that has 400,000 employees I will show you a suicide rate higher than Foxconn's.

Which might explain why the suicide rate at Foxconn is actually lower than any state in the US, and actually lower than elsewhere in China. I know that destroys your evil corporation meme, but I do not expect you to admit you are wrong.
