An Al Quaeda Coup de Grâce to the economy?

A Petrolios Mexicano truck with 17 tons of explosives used for drilling has been stolen in Tamaulipas, Mexico (Just south of Texas). Nobody knows who stole it, but if it was not the drug cartels, then it had to be terrorists.

Of corse, it all depends upon who did the stealing. Al Quaeda has placed over 1000 operatives in Mexico. They have quite successfully blended in with the population and can pass for Mexicans quite easily. We know that several of their plans include procuring explosives to put into planes that they can fly low over the border and attack border cities or large cities near the border. They know that our fighters will not shoot them down, but will try to escort them to landing fields if we interdict them at all. The planes will target the largest buildings in Los Angeles, Anaheim, Long Beach, San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson, Albuquerque, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and elsewhere to show Americans that they are, indeed at war, and America is still going to be bombed any time Al Quaeda wants to.

They can also divide up the explosive and place it in the center of nitrogen fertilizer soaked with kerosene and drive it to border checkpoints to attack border stations if selected for inspection or big American City hubs if not inspected. The sad reality is that our border inspections are very poor and we pass trucks through quite easily and often with no inspection of the cargo's within. We just look at paperwork and pass them on through if it looks proper.

If randomly selected for inspection, they pull up to the inspection station where hundreds of border patrol inspectors are in close proximity. They could stall while the other trucks are passed through with a wave of the hand and hit our highways to raise hell in our cities. Meanwhile the inspected truck would slowly back up to the large inspection building and when it is in place and the inspectors are waiting for the driver to come to the back to open the truck, he will just disappear after setting the fuse/timer to go off in ten minutes.

The border patrol agents will not forcefully enter the truck, because they do not have orders to break the seal initially. They will wait politely for the driver. Even if they did go in, they would not recognize it as a massive bomb until it was too late.

There will be initial news reports of a massive explosion at Nogales or San Diego or other border stations, but nothing linking that explosion to trucks on the American highways. Somebody might connect the dots a few hours later, but by then, it will have been too late. and there will be BIG KA-BOOOOOOOOMS in a lot of major American Cities.

Does anybody have any idea what an attack like that could do to the American Economy and the stock market? It would be the kiss of death to America as we would collapse. We simply could not fund a bigger war, and even if we wanted to, where would we take it. By attacking the two towers in the financial center of the world, Osama predicted that eventually he would bring down the entire American Empire. And you know what, it looks like he is in position to administer the final coup de grâce

Five six years ago coming back from South TX we went through one of the checks. The one guy was a hoot (not really). He was going to play tough guy when his dog pissed all over itself after the guy stuck his face up into Rod's face at the drivers window. Hos jumped up from the back seat and went woof! The guy's dog pissed all over and it insulted the dumb bastard. He was thinking he wanted to harass us after that. Thankfully his superior had a good sense of humor and told him to back off.

Those cars and trucks are backed up for a long ways at the border checks. The guys walk back through there with the dogs. So these cars and pickups don't actually get right through without some waiting time involved.

Surely those little guys and video monitors at the front of the airport where you drive in keep their eyes open for any strange looking vehicles coming in.

The stolen explosives seem like a legitimate concern to me. But then again, I live near the border and have seen some of the stuff that goes across, unchecked, for years.
I drove a truck over the road for about a year after I retired. It was something I always wanted to do. I had to stop because of health reasons.
During the time I was driving, I was amazed and dismayed to find out that I had to drop my load at the border, and let a mexican driver take it into the interior of Mexico. At the same time, mexican truck drivers drove right across our border and delivered their load. I still wonder about the logic of those policies.
On the other hand, there are places along the border where one can drive a truck across with little chance of being detected. The main efforts of our border security are concentrated at the major legal crossings. Despite that, it would only seem prudent to at least check loads atthe border. As an American truck driver, my seal was broken by law enforcement a few times. That meant I had to wait for a company rep, or an independent rep, to come out, check the load and re-seal it. It really wasn't that big of a deal.
I don't think anyone should engage in 'fear-mongering', but at the same time I don't think we should be blinded by 'political correctness' to the point of compromising issues of security that could otherwise be addressed.

On a side note, the FLDS in the area I live in (yes those polygamists) celebrated the towers falling on 911. They didn't do it out of hate though, they did so because they saw it as a sign that the apocolypse was at hand and they would be "carried into heaven". When I asked a friend of mine (yes i have a friend with 5 wives) about it, he said they were forbidden to dance in normal times, but the "prophet" demanded they dance at the prospect of the apocolypse.

I would assume that law enforcement is all over finding those stolen explosives. Neubarth's attempts here to just called me a liar are his blind attempts to insult. I do not appreciate some of the security checks that are ridiculous yet I also understand somethings are a necessity. Rod had a little tiny pocket knife in his pocket one day when we went to get some copies of my file at the SBA office. The security guard made Rod give him that pocket knife and supposedly put it in the trash bin. On our way out five minutes later Rod asked for his pocket knife back, (it was one of those old pearl handle ones). The guy claimed they had already emptied the trash. We knew the asshole was lying but hey that is what we have as proclaimed security going on out here. Paying some thief to steal minor items from the public as they enter into a federal building. Rod was pissed. I told him next time remember to empty your pockets before you ever get there to the door. In case you are wondering why Rod did not walk back out to the parking area and put his knife in the vehicle I'll tell you. He assumed that he would be able to get it back when we left. He is partially handicap and cannot walk that distance it would have taken to walk back out to the vehicle and then back into the building again without having a lot of pain.

I don't doubt that, in fact even expect it. The best we can hope for based on the effectiveness of the US authorities in stopping the flow of drugs and people across the border though, is that the drug gang in charge gives up the explosives in return for something else coming north.

Political events and conditions, like economic events and conditions, have no consistent casual relationship to the rise and fall of stock prices. After 9/11 the stock market fell for about a week. Within 6 months it was 15% higher than pre 9/11. Maybe we should have more terrorist attacks to stimulate stock prices? This idea is no dumber than advocating a war to get the stock market going or that a terror attack will crash the economy.

Your mother was never strip searched out in public and did not have to surrender any piece of jewelry. Once any thing is identified as not usable as a weapon, it is returned to the individual. A pat search is done on all females who set off the metal detector to see if a knife or other weapon is hidden where the bra could disguise it. Remember the threat is not necessarily in the carrier of the weapon. It is the weapon itself. A weapon can be hidden on a baby, child or old woman. Regardless of where it is hidden, it is still a weapon and can be used to kill everybody locked in that plane while it is flying.

If you ever watch the screening process you scumbag, you'd see that. Instead, you want to make up outrageous lies about people doing a vital job. In my opinion, they are not doing enough and are not strict enough, but assholes like you try to mock them so that their efforts can be thwarted. Damn you to hell where you belong. I travel frequently. Having been a military officer, I watch the screening process every time I fly. I see a very professional group of people trying to do a very difficult job and they are constantly maligned by the public. When I see breaches in screening procedures, I report it to Washington immediately, not because I want to get the individual screener in trouble but because I know all of their rules and want to see the supervisors enforce them. Having fools like you making up outrageous lies about them is contributing to the problem nationwide and it is resulting in supervisors not enforcing the rules. Most of them who are not enforcing all of the screening rules have been attacked too many times by the public. I hate damned liars with a passion. We do not need evil people like you running free in this country attacking people in the performance of their duty when that duty is national security.

Terrorist attacks do not make the stock market go down. You are making the conventional error of exogenous cause. Political events and conditions, like economic events and conditions, have no consistent casual relationship to the rise and fall of stock prices. After 9/11 the stock market fell for about a week. Within 6 months it was 15% higher than pre 9/11. Maybe we should have more terrorist attacks to stimulate stock prices? This idea is no dumber than advocating a war to get the stock market going or that a terror attack will crash the economy.

Zander, you destroyed your own argument. The stock market plummeted after 9/11. It did not say down for long because the economy was still solid, We then fell into a recession. You said enough to underscore my point and that is with a totally unsound economy, a strong terror attack can bring about collapse. If it happens, you will see.

It is no more likely that the stock market would drop than it would rise due to a terror attack. It sounds good and maybe it even feels good for you to beleive it wouild cause an economic collapse, but that doesn't make it true. Sorry.

Zander, we already have had an economic collapse. There are 33 million people in this country who do not have jobs or full time jobs. The question is can a terrorist attack cause even further collapse. In the last major terrorist attack on the US we had a stock market crash and then a recession. You can try to deny it all you want, but that is what happened. I am beginning t think that you were drinking a little before posting.
