Charities are reporting that many of the 'residents' of the Grenfell Tower Block were illegal immigrants and that a lot of illegal sub letting was going on.

One charity used the unfortunate phrase 'great swathes' to describe the numbers of illegal immigrants living in the block.

Because they are illegal immigrants, those who escaped are not coming forward to help the authorities ascertain how many people were actually living in the block, and therefore, how many may have lost their lives.

Theresa May has given assurances that their immigration status will not be investigated, and if they come forward they will receive any help they need, including housing.

However, Mayor Khan and Comrade Bin Corbyn are demanding they are given permanent amnesty so that they cannot be deported at any time in the future, and that sub-letters will not be prosecuted.

I agree with May that these people should be treated well and be given all the help that they need NOW, but I'm not so happy with another amnesty.
One of the apartments was found to have 42 bodies in it. We can't be sure why, but if this is down to sub-letters (who are often criminal gangs) then they too should be prosecuted.

What kind of message will this send out? This country 'loses' hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants annually, no doubt many of them are being illegally sub-let to in the many blocks like this one - a criminal offence that carries a 5 yr prison sentence.

Why bother having laws if we continually fail to apply them?

Tilly, the illegal immigrants who lost their lives in the building is horrible and i agree with you those who got away should have help after such a trauma.
And I agree countries like England should apply the laws as well as France. And this Europe that you are going to leave soon is too open we must close the borders a little more.

Permanent amnesty seems like a bit much. If they can't figure out who's missing is that the end of the world? Of course the illegals won't come forward without a deal like Mayor Khan is proposing, but is it really necessary? Why?

Thank you, OL. One of the issues is that people have been practically rioting and have had 'a day of rage' over not being told the number of dead - as though there is a nefarious plot afoot.

This is because people have been spreading lies and whipping up emotions by saying the authorities are 'hiding' the true number of dead.

However, the truth is because there was so much sub letting going on and there were so many illegal immigrants living in the blocks with their entire family of illegals allegedly, it is impossible to give a figure.

Also, there are people who know illegal immigrants who are 'missing' and they want to know if they are safe or not.

The lie that the authorities are 'hiding' the true number has caused a lot of trouble, so it would be good to put that to bed.

Also, we are not YET a third world country where we let people die in infernos and don't even bother to try to identify them.

Well, if things are as you say, you're not going to solve this conundrum. No illegal is going to give their name to officials who only temporarily give them some blankets and a change of clothes but now know they are in the country illegally. Or that their friend they are reporting missing is.
Maybe the Muslim community could set up their own missing persons site, but still, people will be reluctant to give the name of an illegal they are worried about. And others will mistrust any numbers from the Muslim community.

They aren't only being offered a change of clothes and blankets!

They are being offered medical care, accommodation - everything they need for free - along with the promise their immigration status will not be investigated.

If that's not good enough, then yes, they can stay unaccounted for and we will never know how many died, and the stirrers will be free to continue to peddle lies and misinformation to suit their political agenda and cause more unrest - not ideal.

In related news, hundreds of households are now being evacuated from several residential tower blocks in Camden.

It seems that now would be a good time to check how many people are actually living in these particular towers, their immigration status, and the sub letting situation.

Because there are safety issues in these blocks similar to those of Grenfell tower.
