Americans are Unhealthy because...

Actually, they don't take all those drugs. Europeans are much less likely to use conventional medicines or even visit a doctor when they're ill than Americans are.

:disagree:
What about medical conditions? Insulin resistance, fatigue, menopause, lack of sleep, stress. And a lot of medications can cause weight gain too. Meds for depression, blood pressure, depression, mood disorders, migraines, diabetes. Most of the meds given for these problems can cause folks to gain weight. It's not always about self-control, or commericals.

Guess it depends what your medicating with, drugs or twinkees?

What I'm saying is; there are millions of people in the United States on one, or more of these medications. You don't have to be stuffing yourself with twinkees, pasta, or bread to gain weight. In many cases people can exercise til the cows come home and still not lose any weight.

You can exercise till the cows come home but if you counter it with overeating you're right, you won't lose weight. Between the two, the diet (what you eat) end plays a bigger part in weight loss vs. the exercise end.

A lot of weight gain does have to do with diet, but there are thousands of diets and most of them cost a small fortune to keep up too:: Jenny Craig=$400 per month, or more. NutriSystem=$400 per month or more. These diets work but they also require a lot of money to stay on them.

Those 'diets' are nothing more than portion control, which is a huge reason for people's excess weight. We've been 'biggied'.

People who live in poverty tend to buy foods they can cook a lot of and foods that will last more than 1 day, or through more than one meal. There are very few healthy foods out there that don't cost a lot of money. Has anyone been to the grocery lately besides me? :disbelief:

Aah baloney. I just went to the store today. Roaster chickens were on sale, bogo. One will make chicken soup with spuds, carrots, celery, onion, garlic and egg noodles. Total cost of a big-assed pot of soup is around $18 or so and will make many bowls of soup. The other chicken will be roasted and we'll have some sides -- spuds or rice and a veggie. Total cost of that meal will run around $13 and it will be dinner for 4 or 5 with leftovers. You (collective you) can eat well, healthily and cost effectively but you have to be willing to put in the time. Or, you can bag the time, grab some KFC and get biggy.

Portion control and filling up on veggies which are essentially calorie free.

I hate doing that. I do exercise, moving my fucking fat ass around is exercise...and on top of that I have very active kids, and horses. I'm constantly lifting, riding, moving, running (not pleasant for anyone involved) walking...

In the winter the kids and I actually walk a lot more than we do in the summer, because once it gets cold sometimes that's the only time they get to be outside. Once snow flies, it's too cold for recess to be outside, and Nana doesn't let them out for nothing. So I get them all bundled up and we walk...I walk them to school, and I walk to work from there. Which means after work I walk to Nana's to pick them up. Then get her to give us a ride to feed the horses and home. Probably we'd be better served (I know I would) if I'd just walk the whole circle, but shit, by then it's dark and cold and I wanna get my ass home.

No, just don't make personal choices that will cost ME money because I need to subsidize your medical bills because you can't control your addictions.

Thats the cost of living in a free society because whatever choice I make over my own life will always have an impact somewhere on someone else. That is inescapable because we do not live in a bubble where our decisions have no affect on others but I actually choose to live with the "effect" in order to preserve a free society where people can make their own decisions.

Right. Just so long as you're happy and content with your lifestyle (which might have an effect on others), screw everybody else. I got mine. That attitude represents selfishness, not "freedom." This whole new concept of "freedom" has been seriously distorted lately.

Its really not a new concept but just normal. Its the progressive movement in this country with their desire to control everyone else's behavior that came up with a good excuse for doing it by saying "it might affect someone else" so now the thing you could do freely before is now "regulated". Its a crying shame that people who suposely* call themselves "liberal" actually think of excuses to deny other people the freedom to do what they want to do with their lives.

Normal in the universe is a vacuum filled with deadly gamma rays. It is necessary in society to respect others in order to live along side one another.

PS...we're fat because we eat too much. Food is cheap and plentiful, easily accessible, and continually advertised so when we see something that takes our fancy we can hop in our cars and drive around the corner and pick it up.

I blame television. And cars.

No, we're fat for two reasons:

1. Genetics ... humans just get fat sometimes.

2. Bad eating ... we eat too much preservatives and non-digestible chemicals.

3. Overeating of things that taste good.

No, not really, apples, oranges, bananas taste good to most people and are very healthy no matter how much you eat. Almost everyone likes real cheese, which is also really healthy. Meat should be eaten conservatively for many reasons but that's about the only truly tasty food (that's natural) which can be over eaten. Most grains are not favorites but are important. Hell, I love lemons and limes ... which are healthy for a ton of reasons. When people think they are craving candy, they usually are craving something like fruits or even veggies but mistaken the flavor for candy.

Yup and if people would eat fruit on a daily basis their 'sugar craving' would greatly, greatly diminish. And when they did eat candy they'd be satisfied with far less . . . .

Very much, the natural sugars in fruits are needed by the body, but the processed sugars in candy can't be used as efficiently which causes diabetes in most people. Strangely though, corn syrup (rarely used to replace sugar now) is not as bad for you as the artificial sweeteners now used more often, because corn syrup is still a natural sweetener. The problem is that it takes a lot of corn syrup to make something sweet so you should still avoid large amounts of it. What I do find amusing is how they are passing all this off as "new findings" ... we have always known natural foods are better than processed junk, but people need that sticker saying "all new" on something in order to buy it.

I still keep waiting for one of you to list which "freedoms" you think you've lost...

You can still smoke, it just costs you more. You would still be able to buy Coke, it would just cost you another nickel for a 2-liter bottle. You can still buy a gun, you just need to register it and hopefully don't have a record. You can still join protest groups and hold up silly signs. The list of the freedoms you continue to have is endless.

Please list some of those that now constrain you.

Sometimes the Government just needs to be told to SHUT THE H*ll UP!! Now they're going to hike taxes on Soda and Potato Chips? "Yea lets get all those "Evil" Fat People!" Next phase will be creating a Fat Police Gestapo like they now have in Great Britain. Socialism/Communism has never lead to more Freedoms & Liberties for the people. Instead it has always lead to less Freedoms & Liberties for the people. So why do so many support it? So many seem so willing to just give all their Freedom away. Pretty sad and perplexing.

And yet oddly enough, the Brits seem to be quite happy people. Next?

Many people living under NAZIism were pretty delighted as well.

Shows you know nothing of history, either. The Nazis had some social policies in place, sure, but as a government structure they were not a socialist system by any stretch of the imagination. Look what happened to dissenters in Nazi Germany. And any "socialist" policies propagated by the Nazis were not actually extended to all German citizens. German Jews, for example, hardly benefited from any Nazi "socialist" policy, but Aryans sure did.

Inactivity Puts Quarter of Adults' Health at Risk, WHO Says

September 04, 2018 - More than a quarter of the world's adults — 1.4 billion people — exercise too little, putting them at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia and cancers, according to a World Health Organization-led study.
In 2016, around one in three women and one in four men worldwide were not reaching the recommended levels of physical activity to stay healthy — at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week. There has been no improvement in global levels of physical activity since 2001, according to the study, which was conducted by WHO researchers and published Tuesday in The Lancet Global Health. The highest rates of lack of exercise in 2016 were in adults in Kuwait, American Samoa, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, where more than half of all adults were not active enough to protect their health.

People gather for physical exercise in Nantes, France

By comparison, around 40 percent of adults in the United States, 36 percent in Britain and 14 percent in China did too little exercise to stay healthy. "Unlike other major global health risks, levels of insufficient physical activity are not falling worldwide, on average, and over a quarter of all adults are not reaching the recommended levels of physical activity for good health," said Regina Guthold of the WHO, who co-led the research.

Noncommunicable diseases

The WHO says insufficient physical activity is one of the leading risk factors for premature death worldwide. It raises the risk of noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. By becoming more active, it says, people can easily achieve benefits such as improve muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness, better bone health, weight control and reduced risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression and various types of cancer.

The study found that levels of low physical activity were more than twice as great in high-income countries compared with poorer nations, and had increased by 5.0 percent in richer countries from 2001 to 2016. In wealthier countries, the researchers said, a transition toward more sedentary jobs as well as sedentary forms of recreation and transport could explain higher levels of inactivity. In less well-off countries, people tend to be more active at work and for transport, they said. They urged governments to take note of these changes and put in place infrastructures that promote walking and cycling for transport and active sports and recreation.
