American kids are among the dumbest in civilized world. Why?

1) unions 2) lack of competition 3) free tuition
Liberals approve of and continue to support the above status quo because it was their dream come true, and so they are 100% responsible for making our kids among the dumbest in the world! The obvious solution is to remove liberal influence from education.

Two, far right extremists like you are trying to make them the dumbest by changing traditional definitions of politics and history.

And then we have Far-Left extremists who think it's more important to teach LGBT education then science, math and reading.

I agree that we should exclude extremists.

And then we have Far-Left extremists who think it's more important to teach LGBT education then science, math and reading.

"Last year, kids, I taught the 5 times multiplication table. That's been replaced with a lesson on LGBT. Boys, you know that neighbor who keeps telling you to take off your shirt so he can take pictures. He's a homo-sexual, or what we call gay. If you feel uncomfortable around him, that's because you're homo-phobes. Homophobia means there's something wrong with you..."

By dumb do you mean mute or low IQ?

a dumb liberal trying to change the subject!!

By dumb I mean about 23rd from the top in standardized international tests despite having parents of similar genetic backgrounds.

white american students rank in the middle of other white students around the world on PISA. black american students rank well ahead of most international black students.

two things are needed to improve education-

stop using teachers and their education time to perform social engineering. or if you must have social engineering at least make it its own class and leave math, science and english out of it.

go back to streaming students. heterogenous classes dont help poor students but they definitely hurt good ones. homogenous classes allow for expectations that are closer to the students abilities, which in turn make the classes more enjoyable and interesting.

Why do crackpots always have to blame their favorite bogeyman rather than examine the whys of American culture. Lots below for the thinking person. Old post:

Wish I had time to write the stories my wife told me just this week about parent excuses and American student's laziness. Baffling for sure, but telling of why we are growing dumber and dumber as a nation. Oh, by the way, turn on TV too if you want to understand our culture of narcissistic insanity, detective shows, and medical aliments that House can't solve. Then watch Repo shows and whatnot on TruTV for a interesting view of your fellow citizens. Abandon ship, abandon ship!

While Americans point fingers Finland show asimplier way. "Everyone agrees the United States needs to improve its education system dramatically, but how? One of the hottest trends in education reform lately is looking at the stunning success of the West's reigning education superpower, Finland. Trouble is, when it comes to the lessons that Finnish schools have to offer, most of the discussion seems to be missing the point.

The small Nordic country of Finland used to be known -- if it was known for anything at all -- as the home of Nokia, the mobile phone giant. But lately Finland has been attracting attention on global surveys of quality of life -- Newsweek ranked it number one last year -- and Finland's national education system has been receiving particular praise, because in recent years Finnish students have been turning in some of the highest test scores in the world." “Monitoring homework; making sure children get to school; rewarding their efforts and talking up the idea of going to college. These parent actions are linked to better attendance, grades, test scores, and preparation for college,” Barth wrote. “The study found that getting parents involved with their children’s learning at home is a more powerful driver of achievement than parents attending P.T.A. and school board meetings, volunteering in classrooms, participating in fund-raising, and showing up at back-to-school nights.” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/o...-about-better-parents.html?src=me&ref=general

Because of brilliant thinking like this maybe?
Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.

Parents are ultimately responsible for the education of their children. Parents wants schools to educate their children when the truth is that schools are just a tool parents should be using in educating their children. You can not buy education or intellegence.

Parents have to set the expectation in their children of excelence

Parents have to turn off the tv and internet and put a book in their hands

Parents have to stop blaming popluar culture or society when they decide ;directly or indirectly; how much of an influence these things have on their children.

Social promotion and grading on a curve and the everyone gets a trophy mentality have destroyed our public education system

it sounds simple when you say it fast eh?
Surely though, if the government enforces compulsory education it should be reasonable to expect the education that is provided is of an excellent standard.

If we could just raise the standards then poof problems solved. You can raise the standards all you want but as long as parents think its the states job to educate their children nothing will change. Parents are responsible for their childrens education. I raised my sons in one of the worst school systems in the state and they all have excellent educations. I would not allow them anything less but it required work on me and my wifes part. Learning and knowledge are not commodities than can be bought and sold they have to be worked for. We get our work ethic from our parents and most parents are more than willing to allow the school to try and do that and the school can not and will not do it.

Schools give our children the tools to learn but we as parents have to teach our children how to use those tools and instill in them their importance.

Before anyone starts telling me about how some parents are not as smart or educated as others let me tell you this. My Dad can not read. Never learned how. He gave me a love and respect for learning. He never taught me anything in a book but he taught me that my education was important. He taught me that I would teach myself as I went. He taught me it was up to me to become educated.

Good for you, and I respect all of that, but my statement still stands.
If the government insists on compulsory education then you should be able to expect that the education provided is of the best quality.
That doesn't mean that parents still don't have responsibilities to instill morality, life skills etc.
But you should expect that basic education, provided by the government at their insistence (except for the opportunity for home schooling of course) should be of excellent quality.

School do not have the ability to educate without parents helping at home. Parents have the final responsbility in their childs education. The only way the state can educate without parents is if the state raises your children.

The anti-Americans bell rings, and this boards right winger salivate on queue.

Reading the comments on this board would almost convince me that Americans really are the stupidest people on earth if I was foolish enough to imagine that this place somehow represented average Americans.
