That's a dumb statement. Dumbness is indicative of an inability to speak or a low IQ. People with a low IQ usually have trouble learning, be it in school, at work or on these boards. Parents are usually more responsible for their child's IQ's than unions, boards of education, cheap books or staying up late. We have been throwing money at education for a long time and it still goes downhill. Our kids are spoiled enduledged and under worked. We don't value knowledge, we have been taught over the years that we are entitiled and that we shouldn't have to work for what we want, just sit back and complain and it will be given to you. The dem's are great at fullfilling that need but the Repb's let it happen. I think we are both at fault. Grades go down so we hire an administrator who we pay more money thant the last thinking that this will fix it but it doesn't. Teachers face budget cuts and can't teach because our kids can't behave. That is why our kids are among the dumbest in the world and don't start that play on words, if you can't figure this out you fit the thread.

Public education in the US, one of the world's earliest, was done for more than one reason. It is an example of a US institution which, like the House of Representatives, once served the people. Of course, one could say the politicians are serving the people - to those powers that would consume them.

Some countries do not mainstream their special ed students nor do they have special ed.

The US has more immigrants than all other nations combined. Many of those immigrants are illiterate and have never been to school or very litle school.

Other developed countries do not have our "diverse" population. Look and see who is at the bottom of the achievement gap folks.

In short, we are not doing as bad as some might believe.

I'm a teacher and registered republican that sees both sides of the problem.

cons: we need choice and get rid of the unions

libs: we need to eliminate classism,racism and sexism

We have to educate all comers, many peons from Mexico who could care less about education and really only want to make babies, drink beer and work construction or maid service.

4) At least 50 years of an outdated system where all students are treated the same, and have the same curriculum.

but it's always nice to see someone make up whatever runs through their brain and decide that if it fits their nutty ideology, it must be true.

We are ahead in literary/writing/reading skills...

We are behind in math and science. A good percentage of that is probably related to the fact that 70% of the people in this country don't even believe in evolution.

There is a huge disparity based on social background. And our rate of resiliant students (students who exceed beyond what their social status would suggest they could) is only at 30%, as opposed to countries like South Korea, where the rate of resiliancy is closer to 70%.

Finally, we don't reward our teachers. Because they aren't rewarded economically at a level befitting what their ultimate responsibility is (which is molding our children) most teachers come from the bottom third of their classes in school.

No offense to teachers, who have a thankless job to do in the face of extremists who think every budget should be balanced on their backs, but teachers should be rewarded so we attract the top of the class... not the bottom.

The obvious solution is common sense. Students who don't progress should not be promoted. Students who commit crimes at school should be expelled. Lawyers who file frivolous lawsuits should lose their licenses. And kids who can't tell time should not be forced to take Physics.
