Your photo is a little dated. The vast majority of ships in that photo have been decommissioned for about 25 years or so.

Aircraft Carriers certainly have a role in America's foreign affairs. How survivable they are in a world war with Russia/China is the $64K question. My guess is that they are very survivable.

In an all-out war with China, our carriers would be used with the rest of our navy and even air force to shut down all Chinese shipping. Between ourselves, Japan, India and possibly even Vietnam, the Chinese navy and merchant marine would be completely shut down. Their international commerce via the ocean would cease to exist.

You also need to remember that we can also use our amphibious assault ships to carry F-35 aircraft.

In an all-out war with China, the U.S. would likely dominate the sea and the air.

The wildcard is Chinese cyber attacks and, of course, space warfare. Whoever can maintain their own satellites while annihilating the other side's satellites probably wins the war.

With all that said, an all-out war between the U.S. and China is almost unthinkable. There would be no winners, just massive suffering, death and destruction.
