Yeah, education in the US seems to take a back burner. I'm almost certain there are those who would have public education banned and everyone has to pay for their kids to go out of their pocket before they can too.

This is like when I drove into America from Canada and had to go into the visa office to get an entry stamp because I'm from New Zealand. When they called me up while looking at my New Zealand passport they said "Tessa Calogaras from Australia" and then made me confirm that I was from Australia!? There is Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crud.

But our digital world seems to have raised the stakes. Like 99.9% of everything is crud. There are 56,000 works in Project Gutenberg now. That is nothing compared to what is out in the world now.

How are 10 year olds supposed to have any idea how to filter this crap? I talked to a high school teacher that did not know meters form kilometers but tried to encourage students to read Harry Potter.
