Grading The National Polls: Rasmussen In First, Gallup And Zogby Last
By Eric Kleefeld - November 5, 2008, 2:46PM
So looking back on our polling obsession about this race, which pollsters actually did the best job of calling this race, comparing the final polls to the actual results?

Taking a look at the national polls, who was correct in predicting Barack Obama at around 52%, and who got the right margin of a six-point popular vote win over John McCain?

Take a look at these final polls:

Rasmussen: Obama 52%, McCain 46%
GWU: Obama 49%, McCain 44%

Research 2000: Obama 51% McCain 46%

Zogby: Obama 54%, McCain 43%

IBD/TIPP: Obama 48%, McCain 42%

ABC/WaPo: Obama 53%, McCain 44%

CBS: Obama 51%, McCain 42%

Fox News: Obama 50%, McCain 43%

Ipsos/McClatchy: Obama 50%, McCain 42%.

Hotline/Diageo: Obama 50%, McCain 45%

Gallup: Obama 53%, McCain 42%

Most of these polls were on target with Obama winning by five to seven points, and quite a few of them had him in the neighborhood of 52% support. The first prize goes to Rasmussen for nailing the 52%-46% figure exactly. Research 2000 is close behind with their 51%-46% figure. Gallup was way off in giving Obama an 11-point win, but they did have Obama's support at just over the true result of 52%. And Zogby also gave Obama an 11-point lead, at a 54% level of support.

Also, the final Pew poll allocated its undecideds based on demographics and answers to key issue questions. Their prediction: Obama 52%, McCain 46%.

The anti-Rasmussen thing is utter rubbish.

Rasmussen is among the most respected pollsters out there because they are accurate.

Dimes to dollars the White House follows Rasmussen closely - and is increasingly concerned over the information those polls are providing...

Rasmussen has been rarely correct since last November. Conservative in our political and economic environment does not translate into GOP or third-party votes. Remember that Obama pulled the middle and quite a few conservatives. Nothing out there has shown change, other than less than one out of five voters identify with the GOP, according to documented posted elsewhere on this board.

Who ever posted this original thread should be fined for wasting all of our time.

Most other polls are dreamed up to build "news" stories around.

Much as you may dislike them, Rasmussen is only in the polling business. Moreover, Fordham University found them the most accurate pollster out there LINK and fivethirtyeight.com had them #3, behind some pollsters nobody has ever heard of LINK.

Going to impugn them too?

Rasmussen's election polling and their opinion polling are two very different animals.

Legit animals nevertheless.

The tide is not in the Democrats' favor at the moment - that could change, or it could worsen for them...

Not really. Rasmussen does a good job on election polling, but his issue polling has always been subpar.

Consider this. That poll claims the Republicans have a 15-point edge on the economy. Just two months ago, they were 13-points behind on this issue. In the most recent polling I've seen (ABC News/Washington Post Poll. Oct. 15-18, 2009), people are basically split on if they approve Obama's job performance re: the economy (50/48). Same poll shows 41 percent think Obama's economic program is helping the economy (versus 22 percent saying it's harming it).

I knew you didn't have similar results from a legitimate poll, but thought I'd ask anyway

If America trusts republicans on so many issues, why do they only have a 39% approval rating?

Rassmussen wouldn't be tricking us would they?

It is remarkable to see Republicans leading in some of those categories - education, health care and ABORTION?

Good Lord that has to have the Dems scratching their collective noggins!

Education? Considering that less than 6% of scientists are Republican, mentioning Republican and Education in the same sentence is an "oxymoron".

So if you are not a scientist you are not educated???? :cuckoo:

No, if you are not educated, you are a Republican.

If the smartest people in the country are NOT Republicans, who does that leave?

Glad I could clear that up.

Voters Trust Republicans More On 10 Top Issues

Friday, October 23, 2009

For the first time in recent years, voters trust Republicans more than Democrats on all 10 key electoral issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen Reports. The GOP holds double-digit advantages on five of them.

Republicans have nearly doubled their lead over Democrats on economic issues to 49% to 35%, after leading by eight points in September.

The GOP also holds a 54% to 31% advantage on national security issues and a 50% to 31% lead on the handling of the war in Iraq.

But voters are less sure which party they trust more to handle government ethics and corruption, an issue that passed the economy in voter importance last month. Thirty-three percent (33%) trust Republicans more while 29% have more confidence in Democrats. Another 38% are undecided. Last month, the parties were virtually tied on the issue.

I'm not tricked. Rasmussen is so sold out to the rightwing market at this point that it's not even news anymore.

The WS Journal poll has the public opinion of Republicans at 25% positive, Democrats at 42% positive.

That's very interesting, especially the one on social security. I beleive that the democrats were always trusted more on social security. That is quite a reverse and I bet it has to do with Obama's health care plan and his projected cuts of 500 billion a year in medicare. I don't think it's a good idea to anger this group, as there are millions of them and they have a propensity to show up and vote, whereas other groups do not. Seniors rock!!!!

Can you provide that link? I have never seen Rasmussen show much difference from Gallup or any other polling data, maybe a couple of points but they usually are not far off from each other.

Repubs are scoring a plus only in the South. In the West, Midwest, and Northeast, they are a small minority. In fact in the Northeast, they are in the single digits.

Yup!! America loves rebuttlicans.. That is why they got their asses handed to them on the last 3 elections and are now a regional party.. Only 20% of the people identify themselves as rebuttlicans.. Hell even rebuttlicans are going democrat, just look at Arlen Spectre..

Yup!! America sure does love those rebuttlicans...

There's an election coming up next week that the Whitehouse is squirming over. If the dems are so popular, it wouldn't even be a worry for them, but.....
