What should the government pay people to do?

What should the government pay people to do?

Well, the first thing the American Government could pay people to do, is to construct a Nationwide High speed subterrainian rail network, as with the rising cost of jet fuel, travel by air may become to expensive for the average American.

Kurt Vonnegut's Neocon America: War and Socialism in Player Piano

by Thomas M. Sipos

Although released in 1952, Kurt Vonnegut's dystopian Player Piano can serve as a satire of modern America. That may not be readily apparent to those who focus only on its theme of technology obsoleting workers. Seemingly influenced by Fritz Lang's Metropolis and foreshadowing The Twilight Zone's "The Brian Center at Whipple's," Player Piano paints a future America where a technocratic oligarchy has established a corporate command economy and cradle-to-grave socialism. The leaders think they've created a utopia but the proles disagree.

One big problem is that advancing technology makes more people useless every day. Retraining is no answer; even engineers are being replaced by computers. Society has become a player piano, creating flawless music without aid of human hands. However, this Darwinism is not untempered. The useless do not go homeless and hungry. On the contrary, everyone's basic needs are met: pre-fabricated homes, washers, TV, even national health care. And twelve years of free education, which is pretty pointless, as most people graduate to idleness.

Well, not quite idleness. Those with top test scores enjoy free college, then join the ever-diminishing ranks of engineers and managers. The less-brainy majority must choose between the Army or the Reconstruction & Reclamation Corps (aka, the Reeks & Wrecks), and begin a life of menial make-work rather than real jobs.

Lets see the stats that support that.

I can show you stats which show that our unemployment rate is just a fraction higher than in the 1950s, and nowhere near as high as it was in the 80s.

Flipping moron.

I note that this chart does not note that the methology for computing employment/unemployment has changed since 1950.

I'd love to know that the numbers would be like comparing years under one methodolgy.

Doesn't matter which one we select, just so long as they are the same.

What scores of unemployed? Everyone I know that's not employed isn't looking.

Do you count people like me into the numbers? I don't have a paying job but don't want one.

Government needs to be out of our lives as much as possible.

My understanding is that they only count unemployed people actively looking for employment (i.e. collecting unemployment benefits). And this results in the rate being understated far more often than overstated because once your unemployment beni's run out, you don't get counted anymore.

Well then what of my first question? Everyone I know that goes actively looking, finds jobs. The friends not finding say they are looking but actually don't.

Is Portland Oregon just the exception?

That's a strange twist on Vonnegut's intentional audience, considering he was a socialist. :eusa_eh:

Unemployment numbers are constantly low-balled. If you're not actively looking for work, you're not counted. During the height of Reagan's term when unemployment officially flirted on 10%, military personnel were included. During Clinton's term, extension of social welfare meant more people were ineligible to claim unemployment. As a rule of thumb, take a number given by the government and double/decrease it by half, whichever makes a worse conclusion.

The height of government involvement comes from assisting the top spheres of investors.

The only time you have a recession is when an industry closes or is crippled.

There was a recession in the 30s when the farming industry became industrialized.
There was a recession in the 80s when the libs decided to close down logging and fishing industries.
And we'll have another recession if the libs succeed in shutting down the car manufacturers and oil companies, and continue to obstruct the development of rural areas.

It's not rocket science.

America needs a 1930's job program like the average citizen needs another hole in his head. You can boost government spending and create some jobs; but unfortunately you will destroy even more jobs by raising taxes to pay for the new spending. This is why the depression of the 30's lasted so long, and the depression of 1921 lasted one year.

No, that is not how they arrive at the employment/unemployment numbers.

They take surveys, folks.

hard to believe, I know, but that's what the BLS tell us.

This conclusion has no grounds for belief, in my opinion. The post-World War recession didn't result in the same levels of unemployment as the dilemma to come. What fueled the The Great Depression's longevity was inane trade policies enacted by the government after the stock market crashed, the very nature of the crash, and the inability for other countries to pay off debts. New Deal policies had a positive affect on the economy up until a recession hit in '37, and there afterwards it continued to reap benefits. GDP and employment were on a constant, large incline. Even for a recovery period when markets tend to spurt out higher growth, there was a great level of improvement.

Edit- I was going to post URLs to back my claim up, but the forum doesn't permit to make links until I hit 15 posts. Regardless, here are just a few - just move around the spaces:

Government doesn't have an independent source of income to pay for anything. What you are suggesting is that we pay people to perform useless jobs with the money of people that actually work for a living.

The problem with using federal jobs spending to boost the economy is, it's based on the same fallacy as central planning: that government bureaucrats can allocate scarce resources as well or better than individuals in a free market. If that were true, communism would have worked.

The 1921 crash was just as deep as the 1929 crash. Although I do agree that tariffs (Smoot-Hawley) were a large portion of the blame. Really though the economy floundered around and didn't truly recover until after WWII, when cuts in the military began and lots of the worst parts of the New Deal were quietly scrapped. For more reading, I recommend FDR's Folly.
