Why? Because of the debt crisis? Because of lack of job growth? Credit rating downgrade?

Yeah, all of the above, but the main reason is because your political in fighting. You guys are so concerned about the win you don't give a shit about trying to fix this mess. Thread after thread on this board is "It's Obama's fault".."It's the right's fault"..The hatred is so deep and so bitter - and you give the loons like Bachmann and whoever her left-wing equivalent is, the time of day - that is going to sink your country.

And don't blame your politicians - reading on this board you guys are jsut as bad as them - you voted for them and you support them.

Of all the political systems I see from day-to-day - British, Aust., NZ, US - other European countries - the US is by far the worst for vitriol and partisanship. THIS is what is going to kill the American Empire in the end, NOT a credit downgrade, GFC...They are the symptoms, the partisan hackery is the cause...

The infighting between Jefferson and Hamilton supporters was every bit as bad, mate.

Know-nothings come and go on this side of the pond, and the political tone ebbs and flows like a tide.

The problem is that we are a Big Government country and it does not matter what the party that is power is because they expand the other parties policies despite running off repealing them.

When a "liberal" person (not in any name calling way) says we need more Government and a "conservative" says we need less the reality is we only end up with more Government. Yet the debate gets based around less VS more as if "Less Government" is actually ever done.

In the end the prediction is that when you give the Government more power they will just end up asking for more. Giving Bush more power was bad but then turning around and giving Obama more power is bad too... We have a single party, big Government party and in fact neither side of that party only expand certain areas of Government. Bush pushed for more Government in education, science as well as war and Obama pushed for more Government in education, science and war. These are just examples nothing more because you can take any policy and find that both parties only manage to expand them rather than repeal them.

The fighting comes because like the definition of insanity we as a country keep doing the same thing no matter how much it fails… The US keeps growing Government only to fail with delivering on any of their promises.

In 1856, house of rep Brooks entered senator Sumner's office and beat him over the head with a cane.

I'm sure that socialist New England liberal had it coming.

Brooks was a democrat who favored slavery. Sumner was a republican who had just given fiery ant-slavery speeches. Evidently, Brooks didn't like his tone and went over to his office and whacked him.

Wait, that was a different Sumner. Never mind....... :eusa_whistle:

Blow me.

Stop pointing fingers fuckwad.

I've been talking about this for over 3 years and you're just now talking about it.

I've got news for you. We sometimes don't have any control over the dumbasses in a free society.

He originally was a NE atty who joined the free soilers who sided with the dems. He went republican later.

Depends maybe on how the 2012 elections turn out. IF the GOP wins the WH and the Senate and keeps the House then maybe they'll really cut spending and the size of gov't. A lot. I know, they didn't do so well last time, but now they got the TPers holding their feet to the fire, so maybe things will be different.

I don't think we're past the point of no return yet. It's a big hole we're in and some are still digging, but at least the issue of gov't spending is in the national conscience now. The big test will be when attempts are made to reform (cut) the big entitlement programs. Gotta happen, and I would assume some tax hikes to accompany it otherwise there'd be no end of hollering from the Dems.

The real queston for me is can we do this in the next 5 years and avoid a bad depression. If the acrimonious gridlock continues into 2013, yeah we're fucked. We don't have a lot of time left to turn the aircraft carrier around and it's not gonna happen overnight.

sure you do... you can govern your OWN behavior.

Won't happen on either count. These latest antics will cost the GOP plenty at the polls.

I TEND TO DOUBT THAT.

But then again you should never underestimate stupid people in large groups.

It will be people voting their wallet regardless of spin.

This is yet another reason why our founding fathers didn't want a central body to have power...

When people have power, they screw things up and make mistakes.

Follow the constitution and all this will go away.

For the most part, your post is as accurate an assessment as many Americans have of the rest of the world.
For example, some (of the obviously less traveled or sophisticated) Americans will take one or two news stories they've seen on FOX about Canadian Healthcare and be certain that all public healthcare in the rest of the world is horrific. Ignorance comes from not having first hand experience, which seems to be the case with your post.
I know more people than I could begin to count. Most are politically active and many actually work directly in or with politicians. Americans are virtually NEVER as ignorant or rude in person, as here on the net.
Other than a few people I've met in The South, I've never met any Americans who consider everyone with differing views about politics or policy as "Libtards" or "ConservaNazis" etc...
My position takes me all over the country (and elsewhere) and I've never been to a bar, a club, a dinner or a party where people are like they are on the net or on the whackjob pundit shows.
So to judge the entire USA by the extreme views expressed on a message board, or the crap that is pushed on FOX or MSNBC, is a recipe for misunderstanding us. It would be comparable to some post I saw saying Swedes live in poverty because their homes are not as large as American homes.

where do you get that idea?

if they didn't want a strong centralized government, we'd still be living under the articles of confederation.

the problem is pretend constitutionalists who really don't understand a thing about constitutional construction.

Let's see...which party refuses to compromise ("Un-American"- TIME), and has a gigantic propaganda machine that makes half their party believe stuff that is provably wrong-muslim kenyan marxist, BPP, ACORN- and most of the country believe myths- global warming doesn't exist, Pubs cut spending and handle national security better, are better with the economy- that have little basis in fact...
The world is aghast...bring back the Fairness Doctrine. Lies, fear mongering, xenophobia, arrogance and stupidity are not cute...Real media is also totally cowed by the loudmouths...

Come on...

I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground that 'all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states or to the people.' To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power, not longer susceptible of any definition.
