America is now only 45th in the world for press freedom

This is shameful and isn't helped by Trump's trashing the media.

America is now only 45th in the world for press freedom

There are 180 countries evaluated annually on press freedom by Reporters Without Borders, which notes a "growing animosity" worldwide towards journalists. "Hostility towards the media, openly encouraged by political leaders, and the efforts of authoritarian regimes to export their vision of journalism pose a threat to democracies," the World Press Freedom Index says in summary of 2017.

Norway is in first place on the list for the second year in a row, followed by Sweden. North Korea is in last place at 180th, with Russia (148), Turkey (157), and China (176) close behind.

"The U.S.'s decline in press freedom is not simply bad news for journalists working inside the country; the downward trend has drastic consequences at the international level," adds Reporters Without Borders. "'Fake news' is now a trademark excuse for media repression, in both democratic and authoritarian regimes." Read the full details of the findings via Politico here. Jeva Lange
We need to #repealFOTP from our 1st Amendment. These liberal MSM "journalists" are the lapdogs for the Left. There is no attempt to be neutral in reporting the news. Why should we give them constitutional protections no other organization is given?
Because our founders realized the importance of an independent watchdog in the media. You want Pravda? Go to Russia.

The same people that control the Democrat Party control the media, where's the watchdog?

No. CNN and NYTimes online are high capacity magazines with bumpstocks and need to be put under sane, careful and conservative regulations
Sinclair and Murdoch control the Democratic Party?

Soros, Bezos and Carlos "Illegal Immigration" Slim do

Pffft. Every president gets attacked, the rightstream media certainly flayed Obama. None have been as thin skinned as Trump.

I was simply commenting on the fact that in regards to the press ...
It would be utterly ignorant to suggest President Trump is allowed to go unchallenged.

If the media wants to blame President Trump for their failures ... Just add to the list.

.

How are freedoms of the press being limited in the United States? Rightly or wrongly, the president has the first amendment right to criticize news media that he disagrees with.
Yes. He does.

No one says he does not.

But unlike you or I, what the president says has repercussions around the world. The only people with the power to hold him accountable are his constituents and they won’t.

“With great power comes great responsibility”
Having repercussions is not restricting freedom of the press. You seem to be conflating two different issues.

Freedom of the press was meant for the printing press, not CNN or MSNBC or NY Times online. Trump is well within his rights to regulate those
There is no difference.

And no, he has no right to regulate them on content. We do not need state controlled media.

This was a "free press" in the 18th Century; it was an actual press. Reporters took their time and publishers were necessarily limited in what they could publish. That's the Free Press. Today's instant fake new dissemination is NOTHING like the press envisioned by the Founders. Hence CNN and the NYTimes are the equivalent of high capacity magazines with bump stocks are should be regulated

You mentioned the concerns associated with corporate control of media not envisioned by the Founding Fathers.

It is true that large corporate interests have managed to consume and co-op many media outlets.
But ... There are several reason this occurred ... And not just big corporations gobbling up the little guy.

It cannot be ignored that smaller outlets also suffered setbacks when they allowed editorial control to diminish their value.
Add the growing desire of the People to achieve immediate gratification ... And the "morning paper" took a serious hit.

Nowadays ... It is possible for anyone to "shop" their news ... And find something that better suits their personal desires in content and availability.

It's not just Trump, of course, as most on the right are hostile towards the press.

Modern "journalists" spend more time spinning click bait than they do actually informing anyone of anything.

It's not just Trump, of course, as most on the right are hostile towards the press.

When a "news" outlet spends a segment with a "journalist" and three "expert" guests ...
Discussing how the US Marshals could remove the President from the White House ...
If the Special Counsel happens to want to talk to him ...

... That's not "news" ... Just a pile of unfounded fake crap ...

The American press/media is a joke.

And sadly, the public has been soo dumbed down, they think the talking head journalists are intellectuals who are telling them the truth. .... :cuckoo:

Dude.... sweeping generalizations like are part of the problem, not the solution.
Hey Beavis. Your supposed to type "Like" first, then again : Like, like Dude/followed by ; __________.!!!. An OMG ! or OMFG ! at the end adds extra extra emphasis to the gist of the conversation which should be ended with either "IMO" or "WHATEVER".

I completely disregarded this article when it was noted that Sweden was second on the list. A country where reporting on immigrant crime can not only get you fired but entirely ostracized from society.

Perhaps..... But it would be nice if he did it with actual facts once in a while.

Did Jim Acosta tell you that?

What the media is complaining about is that not all media is liberal spouting the liberal line. If there is a single reporter or journalist that does not spout the democrat approved propaganda, no one is free.

What does that have to do with our president often repeating falsehoods and fake news as fact, as well as regularly spouting his hot-headed and un-vetted opinion as fact?
