Part of this is because employers have never had such an easy time finding incredibly qualified hard working employees. It's so easy to replace workers so companies get rid of their best employees before they are due for a raise. It's an employers market. This is leading to overqualified work until ready to drop workers filling low pay jobs.

The GFC left a lot of newly qualified graduates with no hope of getting a job which was exacerbated by the fact that not working in a profession that uses their skills may have consigned them to the industrial-commercial underbelly of the US economy.

Some of them may never achieve their professional aspirations and it leaves a pool of academically qualified underpaid workers for employers to exploit.
