I watched this again last night. Its free on the Youtube.

The answer to my question is a bit confusing.
If you recall the Stage was travelling to Lordsburg via Dry Forks and Apache Wells.

Well after careful study the departure point was Tonto. This seems to be a national park type place a few hundred miles north of Lordsburg but not an actual town as in the film. Furthermore I can find no trace of Dry Forks and Apache Wells is so close to Lordsburg as to make a stop pretty pointless.

I rather think that Mr Ford made up the route .
