Its simply due to the fact that the people who actually agree with him (and there are) were already voting for him, and the people who disagree 100% with him were already voting against him anyway. That leaves the remainder, who while they disagree with him, are not single issue voters, and will weigh the statement less than his other positions.
The effect of his statement will actually DECREASE as the election approaches, as it becomes old news.
