Airline Seating Policy 'Demonizes' Men

...I, for one, would be glad to accompany a child---they make much better traveling mates than some "adults" I have had to sit next to.

And they take up so much less space...

I think the point that Hobbit and I are trying to make here is how horrible it is to teach children to be afraid of men. When you experience that "look" it's really shitty.

I do agree with you on that, and this is something that is becoming pervasive because of over reaction or misplaced feminism, and the justice system's failure to do anything substantial about keeping genuine pedaphiles locked up and away from people's children. We live in a culture that that goes to extremes one way or the other with very little common sense prevailing.

and they sorta of distract you from realizing that you are 20,000 ft up in the air on a montrous piece of very heavy metal.

What I notice lately is that kids are either really really nice, mature and well behaved OR they are really really obnoxious, and bratty. If I was seated next to a nice mature thoughtful kid I would probably enjoy my flight. When I was on vacation a year back I met this little seven year old boy who was with his little sister, mom and dad. He was the most amazing little kid, so smart, like an old soul, he had more common sense than many adults I know. He was taking care of his sister, when it started to rain he put a rain poncho on her and tucked her hair into the hood to help his mom.

That's been my observation too. I can only assume it's a result of parenting style. You think that this is where to polarization of America starts?

Seems plausible...I hope mine turn out like that, Im sure going to give it great effort.

i hate going out to busy places. seems like there are no shortages of assholes who could care less what their kids are doing. or care less how big of a fit they are throwing.

I don't like demonizing men, but I also don't blame the airlines for going overboard on kids' safety. After all, they are responsible $$$$$ for these unescorted little darlings. If I owned an airline, I would seriously consider not even allowing unescorted children to travel on my planes.

As for the man who was asked to move, I can understand his embarassment, and I would be royally ticked off if it happened to me. The attendant should have moved the boy instead. If that was impossible, he/she should watch him more closely in flight, and especially when they disembark.

i would have asked for an upgrade to first class. if that request wouldhave been shot down i would have told them tough shit

Actually, there are a lot of female child molesters, but because they use manipulation rather than force, they get labeled as "forbidden lovers" instead. I'm sure you've heard of that rash of teachers that have been having sex with underage students. Those women are child molestors. Then, there's one more thing to consider. The airline escorts the kid from the ticket counter to the plane, and from the plane to the terminal. They don't leave the kid until they find the parents. The only time the kid is unsupervised by the airline is mid-flight, and what do you think the guy's gonna do mid-flight with dozens of people within arm's reach?

i know that the teachers are considered molesters/sex offenders. that's not in question.

as far as the plane thing goes, as close as the seats are, and as crammed as most people are in the planes, anything could be missed or brushed off as nothing. The flight attendants may not leave the kid until they find the parents or whomever they're meeting, but mid-flight, they aren't watching 100%, and have to tend to their other duties.

I just fear my son being put in a situation like that, where he knows no one else. Personally, I don't plan on letting him ever fly (or travel in anyway) without someone I know very well, and trust 110%. Preferably not without me or dad. Though I won't begrudge him a fun trip to say, Disneyland if a really good friend's parents invite him, and I know I can trust them.

My brother went with one of his friends 2 years ago to Florida. His friend is an only child, so his parents agreed to let him ask TJ so he had someone to have fun with. My parents had to foot the bill for his portion, including spending money, but it wasn't really that much, and TJ had to "earn" it all by being on his best behavior, getting good grades, and doing his chores every day. TJ had so much fun, but my step-mom was on edge the whole time he was gone.
