Iran and state-sponsored terrorism - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

The United States State Department states that this organization provides support forHamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad inIsrael. They also say that Pasdaran has given much support and training to terrorists supporting the Palestinian resistance. They are also accused of aiding the Iraqi insurgency in southern Iraq.[3] On September 26, 2007, the United States Senate passed legislation by a vote of 76-22 designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization.[4] U.S. President George W. Bush and Congress labeled the group under the guidelines established by Executive Order 13224issued after the September 11, 2001 attacks.[5]

In August 2012, Ayatollah Ali Khameneiinstructed the Revolutionary Guards and Quds Force to increase their terror attacks due to what the Iranian government perceived as their interests being threatened by United Nations sanctionsand the West's support of Syrian opposition.[6]

Al Qaeda and Iran formed an alliance during the 1990s in which Hezbollah trained al Qaeda operatives.[43] After the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, Iran evacuated hundreds of al Qaeda personnel from Afghanistan, allowing the formation of an al Qaeda "management council" on Iranian soil. While some al Qaeda operatives were allowed to act freely, others were placed under house arrest.[44][45] Even though Iran has assisted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in fighting Sunni insurgents during the sectarian Syrian civil war,[46] al Qaeda andIslamic State insurgents are reportedly "under orders not to attack inside Iran in order to preserve their supply network there".[47][48] In 2014, there was speculation that Iran might sever its ties with al Qaeda in return for a deal with the West regarding its nuclear program.[47]

1998 United States embassy bombingsEdit
On November 8, 2011, Judge John D. Bates ruled in federal court that Iran was liable for the 1998 United States embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. In his 45-page decision, Judge Bates wrote that "Prior to their meetings with Iranian officials and agents Bin Laden and al Qaeda did not possess the technical expertise required to carry out the embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam."[49]

September 11Edit
The U.S. indictment of bin Laden filed in 1998 stated that al-Qaeda "forged alliances . . . with the government of Iran and its associated terrorist group Hezbollah for the purpose of working together against their perceived common enemies."[43] On May 31, 2001, Steven Emerson and Daniel Pipes wrote in The Wall Street Journal that "Officials of the Iranian government helped arrange advanced weapons and explosives training for Al-Qaeda personnel in Lebanonwhere they learned, for example, how to destroy large buildings."[50]

The 9/11 Commission Report stated that 8 to 10 of the hijackers on 9/11 passed through Iran and their travel was facilitated by Iranian border guards.[43][51] The report also noted that "a senior operative of Hezbollah" (Imad Mughniyah) was on the flights that convoyed the future hijackers from Saudi Arabia to Tehran, along with associates that Kenneth Timmermandescribes as "Iranian agents".[51][52] The extent of Iranian involvement has been questioned due to major differences between the religious ideologies of Iran and al Qaeda;[53] according to the 9/11 Commission report, Mughniyah's presence on flights carrying the hijackers to Iran may have been a "remarkable coincidence."[51]

Judge George B. Daniels ruled in a federal district court in Manhattan that Iran bears legal responsibility for providing "material support" to the 9/11 plotters and hijackers in Havlish, et al. v. Osama bin Laden, Iran, et al.[54][55] Included in Judge Daniels' findings was that Iran "used front companies to obtain a Boeing 757-767-777 flight simulator for training the terrorists",Ramzi bin al-Shibh traveled to Iran in January 2001, and an Iranian government memorandum from May 14, 2001 demonstrates Iranian culpability in planning the attacks.[54] Defectors from Iran’s intelligence service testified that Iranian officials had "foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks."[53]

Riyadh compound bombingsEdit
According to Seth G. Jones and Peter Bergen, the 2003 Riyadh compound bombings were planned by al Qaeda operatives in Iran, with apparent Iranian complicity.[44][56] In May 2003, then-State Department official Ryan Crocker provided information on the upcoming attack to Iranian officials, who apparently took no action.[34]

January 2009 sanctionsEdit
In January 2009, the United States Treasury Department placed sanctions on four al-Qaeda operatives based in Iran. These include Mustafa Hamid, Muhammad Rab'a al-Sayid al-Bahtiyti, Ali Saleh Husain, and Sa'ad bin Laden, one of Osama bin Laden's sons. Stuart Levey, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said that:

“ It is important that Iran give a public accounting of how it is meeting its international obligations to constrain al Qaida... Designations have a far reaching impact, deterring would-be donors from providing financial support to terrorism and leaving al Qaida leadership struggling to identify much-needed funding resources.[57]
July 2011 sanctionsEdit
In July 2011, the United States Treasury Department reported that Iran has been allowing al-Qaeda to channel money and operatives throughout the country. In response, the Treasury Department placed sanctions on six alleged cooperatives, including Ezedin Abdel Aziz Khalil, who was described as an important al-Qaeda facilitator based in Iran. The department said that Khalil was allowed to operate in Iran since 2005, and has been transporting money and terrorist recruits into Iran from the Middle East, and then to Pakistan. David Cohen, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, noted that by revealing these connections, "We are illuminating yet another aspect of Iran’s unmatched support for terrorism."[58]

October 2012 sanctionsEdit
In October 2012, the United States Treasury Department designated Adel Radi Saqr al-Wahabi al-Harbi, a deputy to the al Qaeda facilitator Muhsin al-Fadhli, who is based in Iran, and placed him under sanctions. Al-Harbi was accused of helping the travel of terrorists from Iran to Afghanistan or Iraq for al-Qaeda, as well as seeking money to support terrorism. The Treasury Department said that the al-Qaeda network used by al-Harbi operates according to an agreement with the Iranian government, under which al-Qaeda can operate and travel freely throughout Iran and to use Iran as a key transit point.[59]

al Qaeda in SyriaEdit
In February 2014, the US Treasury Department stated that Iran was helping al Qaeda transfer fighters into Syria, with key smuggler Olimzhon Adkhamovich Sadikov providing "visas and passports to numerous foreign fighters".[46]

al Qaeda in YemenEdit
In March 2015, a federal judge found Iran, along with Sudan, complicit in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole by AQ, stating, "Iran was directly involved in establishing Al-Qaeda’s Yemen network and supported training and logistics for Al-Qaeda in the Gulf region", and that “Iran used Lebanese Hizballah . . . as its primary ‘facilitator’ for providing training and communications support".[60]

U.S. and British officials have accused Iran of giving weapons and support to theTaliban insurgency inAfghanistan.[61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70]

"We did interdict a shipment, without question [from] theRevolutionary Guard's coreQuds Force, through a known Taliban facilitator. Three of the individuals were killed... Iranians certainly view [it] as making life more difficult for us if Afghanistan is unstable. We don't have that kind of relationship with the Iranians. That's why I am particularly troubled by the interception of weapons coming from Iran. But we know that it's more than weapons; it's money; it's also according to some reports, training at Iranian camps as well."[71]

General David Petraeus

Along with the above allegations, Iran is also accused of other acts of terrorism. Including:

  • Mykonos restaurant assassinations. On September 17, 1992, Iranian-Kurdishinsurgent leaders Sadegh Sharafkandi, Fattah Abdoli, Homayoun Ardalan and their translator Nouri Dehkordi were assassinated at the Mykonos Greek restaurant in Berlin, Germany. In the Mykonos trial, the courts found Kazem Darabi, an Iranian national who worked as a grocer in Berlin, and Lebanese Abbas Rhayel, guilty of murder and sentenced them to life in prison. Two other Lebanese, Youssef Amin and Mohamed Atris, were convicted of being accessories to murder. In its 10 April 1997 ruling, the court issued an international arrest warrant for Iranian intelligence minister Hojjat al-Islam Ali Fallahian[74] after declaring that the assassination had been ordered by him with knowledge of supreme leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and presidentAyatollah Rafsanjani[75]
  • According to terrorism expert Daniel Pipes, Iran was primarily responsible for the deaths of some 800 Americans in terrorist attacks prior to 9/11.[76]
  • Sponsoring at least least 30 terrorist attacks between 2011 and 2013 "in places as far flung as Thailand, New Delhi, Lagos, and Nairobi", including a 2011 plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the US and bomb the Israeli and Saudi embassies in Washington, D.C.[34]
  • In 2013, a former Iranian official speaking for Iran's Ammar Strategic Base think tank threatened "mass abductions and brutal killings of American citizens around the world and the rape and killing of one of Obama's daughters should the United States attack Syria."[77]

"My own estimate, based just upon a gut feeling, is that up to a quarter of the American casualties and some of the more horrific incidents in which Americans were kidnapped ... can be traced without doubt to these Iranian groups," Jeffrey said.
All a person really has to do is look at thee brokers of the deal to know we got screwed. How many arab country's OWN Hillary?
And Kerry's wife which is where Kerry got his money is Arab.

So what, even if true. This agreement stops Iran from getting a nuke for at least 10 years. Calling them evil and sanctioning them has done nothing, so keeping it up is insane, nutjob dupe.
So you want to give Iran billions of dollars to use killing more Americans???

And no, the deal won't keep Iran from getting nukes, since they've broken every deal they've made...

And they get ballistic missiles too???

And NO US inspectors??? Only nations friendly to Iran can send inspection teams in.
US inspectors banned from all Iranian nuclear sites under deal Daily Mail Online
U.S. nuclear experts will not be part of the teams inspecting Iran's nuclear sites under the deal agreed with world's powers this week, officials have confirmed.

The inspection teams ensuring that Tehran adheres to the agreement to curb their nuclear program will be made up of experts from countries which has diplomatic relations with Iran.

As the U.S. currently does not, no Americans will be involved in the on the ground inspections of the nuclear facilities, National Security Adviser Susan Rice said.
International inspectors will have access to Iran's declared nuclear facilities, but must request visits to Iran's military sites, access that isn't guaranteed.

Name an agreement THEY broke.
Iran's terrorism is blown out of all proportion by hater dupes, as well as everything else. They have the youngest best educated population in the ME, the majority is dying to join the modern world TOTALLY, and only OUR RW a-holes fighting with THEIR rw a-holes keeps this mess going...

I think many are looking too narrowly at the treaty and its ramifications. Iran may be telling Obama to look at our nukes in an effort to take attention away from conventional operations. Yes they are crazy over there but if Iran would ever use a nuke they would find their country reduced to radioactive glass if not by U.S. Than by Israel. We have already seen that mullahs do not strap on bombs so,it is a pretty sure bet they would not vote for incineration.

An Iran with 150 billion dollars and a freed up economy, a clear highway through Iraq and Syria to Lebanon for weapons transport is probably more of a threat to,Israel than Iran quest for a bomb. The terror reigning down on Israel from rockets, tunnels, artillery, and terrorist intrusions will be debilitating. Iran knows no other countries will put boots on the ground to help Israel, so they will push just enough to get results without direct involvement. They will also immediately go for,the missiles from Russia and China, the anti aircraft radars and missile batteries, and satellite technology. We were stupid enough to crash a drone in the country so drone warfare will be on their priority list. Death by a thousand cuts for Israel is as good as death by a bomb for Iran.

The flood of money will also allow Iran to plan more terrorist attacks in this country by proxy. They had no qualms killing thousands of Americans in Iraq, a fact our president ignores, and they would have no problems helping Isis to do,their dirty work.

Liberals miss the point about the Iran deal. Republicans aren't against a deal, with Iran, they are against giving away the farm and getting nothing for it. Same thing with Cuba. Not getting our imprisoned guys in Iran back through this deal but letting go a super spy to appease Israel is just a rerun of trading a deserter for 5 Taliban generals. The guy doesn't have a clue what he is doing or what the ramifications are. Much as with obamacare( so similar in so many ways right down to the lying) the results of these fiascos will not be obvious til it is too late. These deals are time bombs set to explode long after their authors have left the scene. The constant partisan bickering just creates a smokescreen for the criminals to slip out the back before the authorities get here.

Obiwan has laid out the scientific case for a bad deal. It is a false dichotomy to claim it is either war or this deal. Like with everything Obama, he had a chance to do so much good and squandered the opportunity. Reject the treaty.
