The African Union revealed plans to form a higher committee to support the Sudanese national dialogue, chaired by former South African President, Chief Mediator of the African Union Mechanism, Thabo Mbeki,

Committee meetings are expected to begin with the Sudanese opposition Monday to urge them to join the process.

Mbeki pre-empted his talks with the opposition to meet with the Secretary General of the Popular Congress party, Hassan Al-Turabi, asking the government to release all political prisoners and to provide additional safeguards for armed movements wanting to participate in the national dialogue.
Member of the dialogue mechanism from the opposition, Ahmed Abul-Qasim said that Mbeki confirmed the African Union's decision to form a higher committee to support dialogue in Sudan on Saturday.
President Assistant, Prof. Ibrahim Ghandour said that Mbeki assured them of his commitment to address regional and international opposing forces that operate to hinder the national dialogue.
Ghandour asserted that Mbeki is committed to meeting the armed movements and the forces rejecting the initiative.
The presidential assistant pointed out that the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) have shown flexibility to participating in the national dialogue, stressing that the Mbeki asked for additional guarantees to enter the armed movements into the dialogue, as well as the release of all detainees, without specifying a timeframe.

Mbeki arrived in Khartoum late Saturday night for talks with Sudanese officials to push the pending negotiations with the SPLM-N, as well as to mediate between Khartoum and Juba and Khartoum and Darfurian armed movements.
