Advice please!

So, Santa came early and got me a new desktop.
It comes with Nortons, which I have on my old desktop and do not want to have to purchase again. (have not transfered files and progies yet)
I downloaded AVG for my new babe.
I know you guys are pro's at freeware.

Please tell me what I need (with links preferably) and keep it clean you horn dogs, to protect my new babe! :eusa_angel:

AND..........what do y'all think of Norton?

Zone Alarm as a firewall. (Not freeware)
Norton security sucks.
Love AVG.

I used Zone Alarm for years but finally dumped it. Don't remember exactly why but it would have been due to some negative response on my part.

I'm guessing it blocked your porn downloads.

I've had Norton on my laptop for 2 years and I've had it. Too many times background tasks slow everything down and quick scans do not even finish but freeze the computer. I even uninstalled it 3 times in the last 2 months and used the power eraser but its still messes things up. Thankfully my subscription runs out in 30 days and I can get something else.

You have to dig deep into your system to find all the norton litter, that it trashes your computer with

Norton is the communist of anti viruses. Try avast you will like it. But I think you will have to uninstall norton first.

I HATE norton

On the new PC, I havn't installed it yet...have a 60 day 'free trial'.

I have been advising folks on using Avast also.
I used to install AVG and tell others also, but I have a funny opinion - I don't think anti-virus software should be as bad or worse as the viruses it is supposed to protect you from.

Norton? - the Anti-Christ. I can't believe this over-bloated monster is still so popular. Just goes to show you how Americans are so branded...never look beyond a name they recognize.
Which is of course why Microsoft is what it is as well.

Same here. You can go in and 'postpone' that background scan for 24 hours but after the 24 hrs it resets so you have to go back in and 'postpone' it again . . and again . . . and again. Our computer constantly froze and shut down. We switched to Kaspersky at the end of the summer and so far, so good. Not free but it seems to do the job without bogging the computer down.

Can you elaborate? We deleted Norton but where else should we be looking to get rid of the trash it may have left behind? Thx, Pixie.

I used Free AVG for years and it worked very well. I got a free McAffee with my computer so I'm using that now. Norton is commonplace, I suppose it is as good as anything.

I don't like McAffee having used it previously. I do like Nortons and I have already PAID for it darnital!

Norton isn't as good as McAffee. Course McAffee uses up a lot of your memory with it's constant updates. I have another program called 'System Mechanic Professional' which works pretty good. It conditions your PC as well as protects it. It doesn't cost as much as McAffee, about $29. I like the fact that it defrags your registry and does just about everything you'd want to do to keep your PC working efficiently.

Download the relevant one and run it. That should remove everything Norton related.

You know...there is great irony in the fact that you need a special program to remove an anti-virus program.
