Abortion Rights Group: Unsafe Abortions Kill 70,000 Per Year - Health News | Current Health News | Medical News - FOXNews.com

NEW YORK — Increased contraceptive use has led to fewer abortions worldwide, but deaths from unsafe abortion remain a severe problem, killing 70,000 women a year, a research institute reported Tuesday in a major global survey.

More than half the deaths, about 38,000, are in sub-Saharan Africa, which was singled out as the region with by far the lowest rates of contraceptive use and the highest rates of unintended pregnancies.

The number would be even higher if Roe v Wade was repealed.

As for Abortions in general:

Guttmacher estimated previously that the number of abortions worldwide fell from 45.5 million in 1995 to 41.6 million in 2003 — the latest year for which global figures were available.

It fell 4 million? What about those women who have 15-17 Abortions? Aren't they the norm? :eusa_eh: :eusa_whistle:

A key reason for that drop, the new report said, was that the portion of married women using contraception increased from 54 percent in 1990 to 63 percent in 2003 as availability increased and social mores changed. Guttmacher's researchers said contraceptive use had increased in every major region, but still lagged badly in Africa — used by only 28 percent of married women there, compared with at least 68 percent in other major regions.

The report estimated that 19.7 million of the 41.6 million abortions in 2003 were unsafe — either self-induced, performed by unskilled practitioners or carried out in unhygienic surroundings.

"Almost all of them occurred in less developed countries with restrictive abortion laws," said the report, which estimated that — beyond the tens of thousands of women killed annually from unsafe abortions — another 8 million women suffer complications because of them.

And to think this could become the U.S. in worse numbers if we allow it to happen.

It's uncomfortable for me to say it, but 70,000 people worldwide isn't a "major problem". Also, it's a personal choice for most of these women to have unsafe abortions, especially in the U.S. There might be significant issues with obtaining contraception in Africa for a litany of reasons, but in the U.S., that's not really the case.

and how many do "safe" abortions kill? safe for whom? not the baby.. lessee it's about 40 million since roe v. wade. innit?

The Guttmacher Institute?

How do you know you can trust their numbers? Can you believe them?

For all we know, since there is no legal requirement to report abortions, the U.S. number itself could be 2 million but they only reported 839,000 in 2007, not positive on the year.
How do you know that when the institute wants to claim that a policy is working they don't report lower numbers. Yet in reverse, when they want to change policy and promote abortion, they start reporting higher numbers and claim that current policy is only making things worse; that "abstinance only" education is not helping we should give out birth control (using taxpayer dollars) to everyone.

The number of deaths from unsafe abortion could be 200,000, they can claim that a woman bled to death because of excessive bleeding or died from an infection as long as she didn't die on the abortion table.

We cannot trust the institute because it is an arm of the abortion industry.

Immie

In fact, it's named after Alan Guttmacher, former head of that staunch pro-life organization, Planned Parenthood. No bias, though. ;)

Babies are easy to make and it's not like our kind is on an endangered species list.

Abortion's a risky business any way you cut it, and it is, as pointed out, 100 percent fatal to the babies.

Oh great. You can join Jillian in the "My one child is more valuable than any child from a big family" club.

Don't understand why Republicans care? They only want the kid born and then "screw it". It's not MY kid. I'm not paying for it. It's the woman's fault. She's the one who should suffer. Teaches her a lesson.

Our Government should not be involved with funding the mass murder of millions of babies. That's the only point worth discussing on this subject. I don't care how you feel either way about abortion but i do feel that our Government should not be involved in funding it. You want to kill your baby? Than so be it. Just don't demand that i pay for it though. End of story.

Dishonest, a lie, and only Dems think of children as "punishment". The right recognizes that women who give birth to children generally love them, and there are plenty of wonderful options for women who dont' want to keep their children.

But a lefty of course thinks it's much kinder to kill a child than allow it to live. Because you DO see children as punishment, and the children of the poor as completely without value whatsoever.

Don't put your own hatred on us, fascist. It's all you.
