I just think it would be SO nice if threads really did open to the 'first unread post'.

Too much to ask?

Two examples this morning -

I clicked on this thread for the first time -
http://www.usmessageboard.com/polit...-convention-are-they-crazy-6.html#post5733823
Even though I had not looked at it before, it opened on page 6.

When I shut down last night, the abortion thread in the clean zone as at about page 3 or so. This is where it opened for me this morning.
http://www.usmessageboard.com/clean...line-be-drawn-on-abortion-19.html#post5732537

A huge reason I don't try to follow up on any comments is that I would have to read every single post/page.

You must open yourself wide open to all the cookies and allow full viewing of your browser history, etc.

Gee, that sounds so ... existential. Or maybe like the synopsis to a Victorian era porn book.

Seriously, thanks but some of these issues don't always happen. for example, another problem is that I can't always use the emoticons. I just clicked on several but none would post.

Oh the tragedy of it all.

Are you running any script blocker programs? I had a problem with the emoticons, and had to allow a couple of scripts to clear the issue.

Thanks, Rattie. That is very useful information. I won't be able to achieve that because I had to alter my screen color to adjust dry eye syndrome with constant reading. A light aqua blue dirge keeps me going. I cannot see the mods color post warnings, either, so hopefully I will never impose such issues upon them to cause that to be a problem for them.

Keep up your good work and thanks again. :)

A script blocker won't effect your color settings. What is does is prevent browser attacks by blocking malicious scripts. You get the choice whether to allow scripts from sites you trust, and the program blocks them from everywhere else you don't trust.

It takes a little bit of work to set up, but well worth it to protect your computer.

I posted on 2 other vBulletin based boards and didn't have this problem.

For the Luddite's that somehow manage to get on the internet, let me explain how things work. vBulletin keeps track of your last viewed posts through a combination of cookies and tracking your activity on the forum. If you open a browser window and do not post it will still assume you are reading the posts as they are made, even if you are doing something else. On most forums this is not a problem because they do not have a lot of traffic. Larger forums, like USMB, have more traffic, and the program will assume you are keeping track even if you are not.

There are ways for you to prevent this, you can:

  1. Set your browser to only accept session cookies from USMB, and close it whenever you leave.
  2. Log out every time you leave the forum.
  3. Use the forum software to mark the forums as read when you are going to be away for a long period but don't want to close the browser window.
  4. Never leave.
I use a combination of 1,2, and 3 myself, mostly because I actually try to have a life, even if it is just watching TV.

For the Luddite's that somehow manage to get on the internet...

I'd be willing to bet just about anything that there are things I can do that you cannot. I'd bet that is true about just about everyone on any forum any where.

I subscribe to the idea that there is no such thing as a dumb question and that everyone deserves the dignity and respect of being able to ask a question without being ridiculed for it.

But, that is not true on this board. Mods, admin, posters - doesn't matter who you want to ask because you WILL run into the same nasty attitude. Ask and mod or admin and if you don't know exactly where and how to ask, you're likely to get banned or at least scolded. Or, at least that's what one of the jerk rw's said in this very thread. Ask on this forum and you get jerks like the well named Windbag, putting you down, nasty, always rude, always the childish put down.

Windbag - sit on it and spin.

You, and others like you, are the very reason why I don't ask questions. Add that to the idiotic mish-mash of "rules" and you know what? I don't really give a large mouse's behind. If insults make you feel like a Big Man - go for it.

Now, brace yourself for the rest of butt kissing rw's .......................................

My high school physics teacher used to tell me that the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. My personal experience is that there are plenty of dub questions, and the people life most likely to ask them are the ones that tell me there is no such thing as a dumb question.

I flat out told you I never have the problem, you described, and you never asked me why I don't. That made you not asking a dumb question. Despite this, I explained how the software works, and how it is programmed, and how to make sure you never get caught in its assumptions. If you chose to take offense at that, you are actually proving I am right in calling you a Luddite.

Come to think of it, they way you keep insisting we go backward in time and stop using things that make life easier kinda fits in with the whole theme of you hating progress.

As for the rules here, have you read my signature? I don't even know what the rules of this place are, yet I have never once gotten in trouble for breaking them. I simply presume they make sense, and conduct myself accordingly. Try it sometime, it works.
