Well, the important question is "For what?"

Both organizations are poverty charities with a political and military arm. Imagine the Salvation army with real guns and a real budget. In the areas they work in, they provide schools, medical care, food, busywork type jobs. The political arm expects the folks who get the aid to remember who provided the job and the food, and the military arm recruits from the charity cases.

They work in war devastated areas and seem to have a high level of competence and a low level of direct abuse, unlike the UN, which has a reputation of the exact reverse.

Because Israel maintains a "war materials" blockade on Gaza, the only source of income for a large part of the population there is Hamas charity. (How Israel defines "war materials" causes larger or lesser degrees of angst among its suporters, but Israel seems to define any and all metals and any and all fertilizer products as war material. (As Timothy McVey showed, you can get a lot of boom out of fertilizer))

So Hamas is actually taking care of business, according to the Arab concepts of warmaking, they fall within the bounds of permissible (but again, according to western standards, they don't) and they are actually taking care of people's needs.

Of course, the blockade wouldn't be there without them, their education is mostly really mentally ill kinds of indoctrination, so I would argue that they are a really bad problem. They cause the problem they solve badly.

So I think they are a bad thing, but there is no one else doing anything for real there anyway for the needs that do exist.

What if someone came to your house, told you that you have one hour to leave, no money for your house or anything you leave behind, then they put you in a fenced off compound with nothing, then you get asked if you want to make that little shit hole your new country, instead of trying to get your original land back.
