A bit of a shock finding one of these in your front yard in the middle of a built up area. How in the world did it get there?

Also, these are very common for those with palm trees in their yards.

Very pleased that the North Las Vegas Animal Control showed up quickly to take the poor creature back into the true desert where it belongs. Amazed at how much ground it covered in our back yard where we put it so stupid kids couldn’t throw rocks at it any more.
 
I think your whole point is that since Las Vegas is in a desert then the tortoise and scorpion should be living there, not humans.

More that we humans who live here forget that Tortoises and scorpions have a right to live here too.
