Here is an excerpt from an article examining unemployment and the food stamp program:

....For example, the level of those enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — food stamps — has remained elevated even with an economic expansion that is nearly 7 ½ years old. SNAP recipients totaled 33.5 million in 2009, the year the recession ended. In 2016, the number is at 45.3 million. The government shelled out $74 billion in benefits last year, about double the level of 2008......

Huh? 12 million MORE food stamp recipients during an economic expansion? What kind of expansion is that?
So 12 million more food stamp recipients under Obama AND more importantly the food stamp costs have DOUBLED in 8 years. So that's a 35% increase in recipients and a 100% increase in payouts. Can you tell Liberals have been in charge?

In my area ( San Francisco) the new mega rich Hi-Tech people are moving into the brand new Hi- rises which used to be affordable housing ( torn down ) , many are pushed out of their homes and left homeless.
The average age for a Hi- Tech is 22- 40 years old... I know many in their 50's are considered old , and can not a good job to be able to afford the cost of living.
Many people work 2 or 3 jobs at minimum wage and still can't afford to live in this area...

I seem to recall the republican congress didn't think minimum wage should go up, while they gave themselves pay raises..

are you surprised

I take care of some that desperately need their stamps to eat a proper meal, especially for health reason.

every form requires documentation, but we know there is fraud and abuse. Some would eat garbage, pet food or cheap junk food even if they need special diets, americans have paid their taxes for years/decades, while other just want free hand outs

What is also tragic is military families that need to apply

Got a link...

... or is it faux news?

About the SNAP program or the purported recovery despite deflation in both food and energy. This is not a recovery by any reasonable measure. On the other hand even processed and even many prepared foods without seating are dropping in price. I can get fresh made soups from two caterers with takeout options and Soup's On within 1.5 miles and generally they are cheaper than the top shelf from Progresso or Campbell's.

No...what the OP isn't paying attention to is a few things. The government has actually put an effort into advertising to people, even those that work, they should apply for food stamps because they may qualify. So now more than ever, you have people that are working, but because wages are so horrible, they get food stamps as well. Also, many food banks are empty because not as many people are donating to them anymore... so therefor people again are dependent on food stamps. Now the numbers in the OP might be high now, but with the fact that unemployment rates have gone down, fewer people now qualify for food stamps indefinitely if they aren't working. They have to meet certain requirements to keep their food stamps, so thousands of people in various states have been dropped from the program.

No links for any of these claims?

Since your putting so many numbers out a link would be warranted.

The wealthy are kicking poorer people out of the inner cities and recreating them for themselves, with elaborate private schools, and sustainable living. The poor will live in the rural areas, working on farms and in plants making things for the wealthy. Look at what is happening in NY, Avenue Schools, at 50 grand a year. Even in Detroit. That is what the ARM's and easy mortgages were all about , seizing land. Dan Gilbert from Quicken Loans can tell you all about it, Detroit is now known as Gilbertville. Yes they cleaned up the inner city by the waterfront , same with Cleveland, but chased the poor away, and the elites took over.

sure you do...................................

This is a rather strange situation in as much as there is currently a cheese buying program that has absolutely nothing to do with SNAP. It costs money to store this and presumably other price support food products for farmers but giving away food to hungry people is not acceptable. MREs have a shelf life so why not give away these food packs that will be thrown away soon enough

You mean because I pay attention to the news? And because we already talked about Food Stamps in the Maine thread?
