A Question For The Scientists On BP

BP is soon to turn over $500 million to someone for the purposes of studying the long-term effects of the oil spill on the Gulf. The Obama Administration wants the money divided among Gulf states governors for distribution to scientists.

Some fear this will render the $500 million a pork barrel, and that scientists outside the Gulf states will be excluded from participating.

What say you? What is the best way to distribute these funds IYO?

Quantum Windbag, this is an appealing idea, but if BP controls the distribution, then won't they also have control over the results? I dunno why we can't just allow the CDC or NIH or whatnot to make these awards?

Are not those Gulf state governors RepubliCON$? Why would Obama give pork to the GOP? It seems everything Obama does is called pork by some radical extremist somewhere.

Perry in Texas, Crist in Florida, and Barbour in Mississippi are also GOP governors.
If the money is "pork" why would Obama be giving it to the GOP????? Obviously it is not pork.
And what limits these governors to use only scientists from their respective states????

Well they are all GOP governors so it is a possibility they will treat the money like pork, but more likely there will be a combination of local scientists who have expertise with the Gulf and outside scientists who are experts on oil spills. Only time will tell. The article does however point out that "at least some new partnerships between Gulf Coast institutions and those outside the region will be formed. Already, Louisiana State University and Woods Hole are working together."
