A Question for Black posters

Racists in the UK can kiss goodbye to a career in the public eye but in the US they get sent to Washington.

Hello, Tommy. In the USA, specifically WHO is beefing about racism impeding black or non-white Americans from achieving success or equality?

How do you cope with it on a personal level ? What do you tell your kids ? How do you rationalise this and keep your temper ?

Tommy how do parents explain to their kids that a sitting president willfully ignored generational CHILD ABUSE, as well as promoted violence riddled, female hating music composed by victims of generational CHILD ABUSE?

Peace.

I DON'T think Tommy will be able to answer this, at least not in an intelligent and coherent manner.

Hi, Mr. B. How about enjoying some early British blues while waiting to see if Tommy replies?

Thanks, Avery. I've heard of Long John Baldry, but don't think I've ever heard his music. I'll give this a listen. And as you probably know, Elton John took John's name and added it to another musician's name that he knew, Elton. And voila, Reginald Dwight became Elton John.

I can see that racism is a major blight on US society. It sort of shocks me. We have issues in the UK but nothing like I see on these forums.

I wont respond to redneck racist trash on this thread.
I rationalize it by educating myself. The more I learn the more I understand where it comes from. I have educated my kids to the achievements of Black civilizations in the past. I tell my kids to not waste time trying to convince whites that racism exists. I tell them the best thing they can do is succeed. I give them the real truth in knowing they have to work 10 times as hard as a white person to get the same level of reward. I must have done a good job because all of them are wildly successful.
And probably extremely racist.

My very first RnR concert was spent groovin' and dancing in the fourth row of CW Post's Tilles Center witnessing LJB opening for J. Geils and headliner Al Kooper.

Honestly, by the time Kooper took the stage I was worn out from RnR overload. I don't recall any of his performance though I recall much of Long John and J. Geils rocking my young world.

Covers of Morning Dew and Flying are two of my favs.

Tommy loves to run down American Southerners by referring to them as "rednecks" but Tommy has never been to the American south

Tommy is a bigot of the highest order who can't figure out that real life is not like internet forums.

Also Tommy when you get around to it explain to us why the food sucks so bad in the UK. All those years of a so-called "civilization" and the best you can come up with is Shepard's Pie? You people are inbred

Tommy, racism is nowhere near as prevalent as our biased media portrays it. The media pushes this idea because it's just another swipe at President Trump. They incorrectly portray him as racist and our country being more racist because of him. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's complete BS.
May I ask what your race is?

Sure. I'm white/Caucasian, born in Chicago in 1961. Lived in and around Chicago until 1971. I remember REAL racism in the late 60's to '71. Unfortunately back then a lot of whites hated blacks, and vice versa. I was confused by this because my parents taught me at an early age to always show respect to others, regardless of their skin color. And to judge others by their actions and manner, not by their race. My parents explained to me that unfortunately this racism had existed between whites and blacks in Chicago for a long time and was passed down from one generation to the next. The "racism" that is supposedly strong in this day and age is nowhere close to what I observed when I was a child. I believe MOST people have become much more accepting of others of different colors these last few decades. I live in Valparaiso, Indiana, I've been back here for nine and a half years and have seen no racism whatsoever. I've been to Chicago only a few times since being back here, so I have no idea what things are like there. I just don't have a desire to go to the big city anymore. I've never been a racist, I took my parents' words to heart when I was a kid and this outlook has boded well for me throughout my life.

i appreciate your reply and agree that we have come a long way since the 60s... thank God. The only point is like to make is that your perception and experience around racism as a white male is quite different from that of people of color. You are a spectator watching the game but for those who are in the game you have to recognize they have a very different view.

What you see on internet message boards is the underbelly of society, what racists think and feel but don't generally voice in public or polite/mixed company. It most definitely exists, but is not or has not been so in your face until recent years, maybe since the election of a African American man to the highest office in the country.

Nonetheless getting back to your question about your soon to be born grandson, I would suggest that his parents ensure that from as early as possible, that his playmates be as diverse a group as possible. Children are a lot smarter than they are oftentimes credited with and while they are able to discern differences such as color and cultural differences in their playmates and those who eventually become long life friends, as young children they don't attach positive or negative attributes to those differences. That only comes from the influences of others, usually their primary caregivers.

Ensuring that they grow up in a environment where it is 100% normal to be surrounded by and friends with those from different ethnic groups, races or religions is the best way to ensure that if they were to encounter any of the negative stereotypes touted by racists, not said just about him but others as well, that he have the ability to know for himself based on personal experienes and observations, that they are untrue and said for the purpose of trying to hurt others.

My parents didn't teach us how to deal with racism, since it was pretty much a rarity to encounter at least back when I was growing up (the 60s - 70s), at least for us kids, I have no idea what my parents had to deal with on a day to day basis. All I remember picking up from them though is that it's the racist who has the problem in the equation, that you could almost feel pity for them because they're mentally handicapped.

Congratulations by the way.
Thanks Mariyam. He will have a wide range of acquaintance. His Dads family live in Birmingham which is a pretty modern place where people get along regardless of race or religion. His Dad seems determined that he will grow up English but that will be a battle to come.

At the moment they are living in Liverpool which these days is a pretty chilled area. Seems like racists only live in smaller more isolated backward towns in the UK. I agree that it is a form of mental handicap, primarily by people who have failed in life and need somebody to blame.

A few months back she brought him home to meet us. After that she went to pick up the two kiddies that she has babysitted since school. They are Asian and their parents run the chippy. They went into town and stopped for cake in a cafe. Her partner stated to me that it was the first time he had been conscious of his colour. A white girl, a black lad and two asian infants was freaking out the old dears in the cafe. They were trying to work out the relationships. Nobody said anything but there was a lot of staring. My Daughter thought it was funny but he was a bit uptight about it.

Said by a white person. This is like men telling women that sexual assault is nowhere near as prevalent as our biased media portrays it.
