a perfect image to describe movie piracy

If it's illegal to copy/pirate movies but you can legally purchase software to do this . . . . why hasn't anyone gone after those software makers? Is there a difference between copying and pirating? Copying for home use (like making a mix cd) vs. pirating, copying with intention of selling/distributing? Is that the difference?

I have a confused.

Well I hope you do not find out the hard way that you are incorrect.

I thought the courts ruled it was fine, like making a copy of a tape or CD.

I thought they ruled it was the act over braking the protection that was illegal?

The owner of the legal DVD is maybe allowed to make a copy for themselves I think, but not allowed to give it to anyone else.

Zinnnnnnnnnnnnng

you can't understand how taking someone else's intellectual property; something they created, paid for and produced, with THEIR money... is stealing?

not in the usual sense. the producers aren't losing anything from it. I would never pay for it in a theater as stated before so they would never get money from me anyway. they aren't paying for the bandwith to download it since they don't host it etc. I am not taking anything from them directly and they are not losing any sales or money from my actions.

:eusa_eh:

I would have used :wtf:
Talk about some serious rationalization!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about pure bullshit!!!!!!!!!

that's already been covered

I can buy a gun at wally world. However many uses of that gun are illegal.
K. But there are legal uses for that gun as well, right?

IF we've established that is is not ever legal to "pirate" movies, then why is there software available for purchase legitimately? Or am I missing something?

Other than a lot of sleep lately ...

homemade porn..

Can you say "Disclaimer". They are legally producing a product that you can't legally use except under specific conditions.

That's what I was saying. I think that was Phoenix's point, as well.

Fair use would be making a mix cd to give to your kid; infringe would be making a mix cd and selling it . . . yes?

giving it to immediate family in the same household may be ok, but not allowed to give it to anyone else.
Selling it is askiing to be caught.

No.

That'd mean you could give it to anyone so long as you did not sell it (They killed that idea by attacking Napster).

My understanding is you can make a copy for yourself to preserve the original.

So all those mix cd tapes my (then boyfriend) hubs made for me (that I inadvertently threw out cause he left them sitting in a bag next to the trash can. How was I suppose to know???) was wrong?

So, If i use software i have legally purchased to burn a copy of a rented DVD......?
That's theft, as you merely rented the rights to view the material. The 'due date' is the end of the period for which you have the rights to enjoy that material.
