President Obama mobilized the U.S. government Wednesday for a massive rescue and relief operation in the devastated capital of Haiti, ordering swift military and diplomatic assistance and pledging an aggressive effort to save the lives of those caught in Tuesday's earthquake.

Naval ships steamed south and flights began shuttling search-and-rescue teams to dig through rubble in Port-au-Prince. Military aircraft flew over the island, mapping the destruction, while U.S. officials coordinated the efforts of nongovernmental aid agencies. Coast Guard helicopters began flying seriously wounded Americans from the U.S. Embassy on the island nation to the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, about 200 miles away.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The United States is sending aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to Haiti to assist the relief effort there. The ship is underway and expected to arrive off the coast of Haiti Thursday, U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) said Wednesday.

Apart from the aircraft carrier, the U.S. military has also sent a Coast Guard helicopter to evacuate four critically injured U.S. Embassy staff. Elements of the Air Force 1st Special Operations Wing are being deployed Wednesday to the international airport at Port au Prince, Haiti's capital, to provide air traffic control capability and airfield operations.

Just thought all of you would like to see some of the response.

In spite of what many see as a negative global reputation, this is what the US does best. In times of need, both the American people and the American Govenment has stepped up to provide aid and never asked for anything in return.

Couldn't agree more.

We should do what we can to help these misfortunate people in their time of need but we should not be the only country to help out. They do indeed need a hand - not only from the US - but from the whole world. It would be nice if "all" the countries of the world could band together to help these folks out and that's regardless of that countries relationship with the US. Time to put the boxing gloves down and come to the aid of a truly needy country.

how did they get him off the golf course ?????

Easy. Someone reminded him how well this played with many members the public.

Plainfielders wishing to help in the Haitian relief effort may do so by making cash donations in several ways.

(Because of the widespread disruption of Haiti's infrastructure, collecting of clothing, food and medical supplies ARE NOT A GOOD IDEA AT THIS TIME. Resources will be better mobilized by non-governmental organizations that are well-prepared to target needs quickly and effectively. Also, donors are advised to be aware of the inevitable scamsters who attempt to use such disasters to rip off the unsuspecting. Give only to recognized charities and NGOs.)

If you are trying to locate relatives in Haiti, call the US State Department at (888) 407-4747.

Here are some ways to donate --

American Red Cross: see the Tri-County Red Cross support page here.
Interaction.org has a complete alphabetical list of member organizations (including many religious denominations) and contact info here.
Catholic Relief Services: CRS website is here; where you can also make donations via cellphone.
Doctors Without Borders (Medicins sans frontières): Website is here, with donation info

PLAINFIELD TODAY: Ways to help in Haitian relief efforts

I would caution you ALL to be very careful who you donate too in this nation, because if it is not a recogonized group or someone that checks out, more often than not in Haiti relief money and supplies are often stolen and never get to the people that need them.

:clap2:

As a people, the american people personally donate more money to every disaster than all the worlds governments combined (yes that includes our own government).

We have always been first and formost in times of need for other countries. Way to go President Obama. I dont agree with his policies and will let it go at that. This is a good thing.

The US Military is in a unique position to provide disaster aid. They can rapidly deploy to any location and can provide mobile hospitals, power, communications, water purification and food. They are also positioned to provide rapid logistics support.

Rightwinger is right, we as a nation have and will provide aid in times of emergency. The US govt nor it's people do this expecting anything in return.
If you provide humanitarian aid with the thought of getting something in return, its more like prostitution.

The only way you get the middle finger is if you ask for something.
