This is a media-era parable inspired by Wag the Dog and Jerry Maguire.

America was a land of celebrities and entertainment, and consumerism was the signature of the American way of life. The small farm was now Wal-Mart, and the public arcade was now Internet-connected Xboxes and Playstations for Madden-Nation. While some were simply participant observers of this new trend, others were integrally involved. Celebrities like Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise were actively involved in this 'evolution of civilization.'

Americans liked Best Buy, RadioShack, Target, White Castle, and Amazon.com. Software developers (mostly anonymous) were the new field-heroes (replacing the gung-ho automobile-factory workers of yesteryear's Detroit), and Internet-hackers were the new terrorists(!). In this era of Microsoft, NASDAQ, and eBay, commerce made media-dolls (celebrities) gods for lazy pedestrians to basically worship, a point stirred up by provocative and ingenious film-maker Woody Allen in his groundbreaking opus Celebrity (starring Leo DiCaprio).

All Americans were 'participants' in this culture, since everyone appreciated the 'cholesterol-conveniences' of being able to order food online or with their smartphones to quickly pick up on their way home or on their way to work(!). No one was 'immune' to his modernism 'splendour.' However, there were malcontents and dissidents (not necessarily connected to anti-civilization formal fundamental terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIS). These pedestrian American malcontents/dissidents formed a secret underground 'union' called the New Know-Nothings (NKN). The NKN was comprised of random lesser-known media faces/celebrities, poetic Internet-bloggers, and self-proclaimed idealists (many Ivy League graduates of the new millennium). The NKN was invested in turning the consumerism-cholesterol of modernism (e.g., Planet Hollywood, Facebook) into a more interactive metaphysics-arcade (e.g., WikiTravel, Tron, EWTN, etc.). Would it work?

xb15.jpg

Not everyone liked what the NKN stood for, since modern consumerism conveniences were basically and honestly 'convenient' enough to ignore 'philosophy-oriented mercantile politics.' Plus, the NKN sounded like pseudo-socialists, which turned away masses simply looking for a fun NBA game to watch on YouTube on their handy-dandy iPhones. However, the NKN did draw the attention of American radio-DJ social critic Don Imus who likened the 'underground club' to a modern-day Theosophical Society (something Sir Arthur Conan Doyle might explore if he were around!). The NKN appreciated the endorsement of Imus and one Hollywood (USA) film-actor Tom Hardy (star of Mad Max and The Dark Knight Rises) called into Imus's show and stated, "If Earth is controlled psychologically by Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks, no one will remember the democratic (non-frills) contribution of Bob Ross, Mister Rogers, Ed Sullivan, or Robin Hood!"

xb18.jpg

After Tom Cruise caught wind of this growing cult-sentiment following of the NKN, he decided to give a press-interview statement about the modern social intrigue of publicity-related social consciousness events (catalytic for populism-politics) such as Dianetics/Scientology symposia held at EuroDisney. Cruise believed modern media was not an arena for 'philosophical debate' but rather for energetic consumer-targeted marketing. Cruise had many followers, but even members of the NKN were fans of EuroDisney, so perhaps 'TrumpUSA' (with all its characteristic commercial fineries) would find some kind of 'historical resolution.' This was important as the symbolic Winter Games in PyeongChang (South Korea) approached, and the West was pensive about working out key nuclear-disarmament fair-trade deals with troublesome neighbour North Korea(!).

After much consideration, U.S. President Donald Trump said in the press, "Look, all I care about is American youngsters finding the enthusiasm to surf on Facebook and learning about various businesses and social leaders (including politicians) on the consumerism-iconic social networking modern website, and that requires a serious political appreciation of the cultural impact of new age merchandising! That's why modern politics is all about commerce-based values!" However, both NKN members and non-NKN members (e.g., Tom Cruise) wanted to know what Trump's solution to the problem of eco-waste really was in this new age.

GOD: I worry that America is too much about Wall Street!
SATAN: I think the NKNs represent the paranoia-faction...
GOD: But are the 'NKNs' strong-enough to criticized Planet Hollywood?
SATAN: Democracy is about negotiation, not standards.
GOD: True, but consumers want reliable production and goods.
SATAN: Yes, but convenience is also related to etiquette.
GOD: True, no one appreciates political cartoons of politicians guzzling cheeseburgers.
SATAN: Yes, these cartoons represent sarcasm and the desire to improve society.
GOD: Maybe American kids should be told their Barbie dolls are 'spiritual.'
SATAN: It's difficult to make consumerism idealistic, since it's convenience-based.
GOD: Well, it can at least be customs-respectful (e.g., eBay seller-ratings).
SATAN: Do you think future archaeologists will say, "Facebook was gluttony"?
GOD: I think they'll say, "The NKNs were the new version of Anarchism."
SATAN: Maybe I'll teach a Yale Literature course --- Milton and Sony(!).
