Every morning, Susie Smith takes some bologna and bread she got at the local grocery store and makes herself two sandwiches to bring with her to her job. She then goes to the local gas station and fills up her environmentally friendly hybrid car with gas.

Susie then goes to work at the Birth Control Factory, helping to make millions of the tiny pills for America.

Susie does all this for free. She wouldn't think of asking to be paid to make these pills. After all, we live in a world "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."

At least, that is the fairy tale the woman who confronted Mitt Romney yesterday in Illinois believes:

After Romney riffed for about 20 minutes on President Barack Obama’s management of the economy, he solicited questions from the large student-heavy audience.

As the first questioner made apparent, these voters were not pre-screened.

“So you’re all for like, yay, freedom, and all this stuff,” said the first woman to approach a microphone. “And yay, like pursuit of happiness. You know what would make me happy? Free birth control.”

I mentioned this entitlement attitude in my Myth of Free Roads topic last week. And here we see it once again out here in the real world.

Her remark drew a mix of applause and boos from the crowd, and a rebuke from the Republican frontrunner.

“You know, let me tell you, no no, look, look let me tell you something,” he said, waiting for the crowd noise died down. “If you’re looking for free stuff you don’t have to pay for? Vote for the other guy, that’s what he’s all about, okay? That’s not, that’s not what I’m about.”

"Cable...er, the Pill should be free...like the roads!"

I don't even know if people with the entitlement mentality even give a thought to how they are supposed to get their free stuff. Perhaps they think government has warehouses full of money waiting to be doled out or maybe they imagine Obama and the libs riding around on their white horses and robbing only the evil wealthy and then giving the money to much more deserving people. Of course, the takers feel they are more worthy than everyone else.

They simply say they need or want and expect someone to deliver. Do they care that a great many Americans work hard every week to support their own families, only to give up a big chunk so a nanny state government can take care of other families? If they do realize that or care, they don't show any gratitude. I've never heard any of them state in public that they appreciate what they tax payers provide. Instead, I always hear someone saying it's not enough. They must want government to whip the working horses a little harder so they can take more from them to pass along to the deserving ones.

How did this class of people get so deserving that they now have the workers of this country working for them? And they don't have to do anything but whine to get the politicians running herd on the rest of us.

They have been taught from the crib that they are "special" and it is the special honor of others to provide for them.

Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should loose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in the dark)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.

He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, “We don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have”.

Yes.. what makes these types of 'liberals' happy is something at the expense of other....

Funny thing is we have the freedom to PURSUE happiness.. not to have it given to us by government or by using government to force others to give it to us in other ways

All assumptions. You want to pretend that liberals are all good and others are all bad.

It's a fact that a great many able bodied people are takers. It's a fact that government can't give them anything until they take it from others.

It's a fact that every day they are asking for more. When will it be enough? I believe it won't be enough till we are all equally miserable.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too.

Employer-provided medical insurance needs to go away. It is one of the biggest causes of rising health care costs.

Thanks, unions!

You need to buy health insurance the same way you buy your auto, home, and life insurance.

He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

And there it is! The liberal mindset believes we who foot the bill rejoice in having to pay for other people's free stuff!

Incredible.

Holy shit, that is funny. "...gives everyone the oppportunity to be a contributor".

Oh, please, please, please give me an opportunity to pay for your free stuff!

BWA-HA-HA-HA!

Wow.

Joe Republican drives a car to work on roads which union contractors with political connections built at billions of dollars of cost overruns at taxpayer expense.

He drives an SUV just to piss off liberals.

The woman's comments were at best semantically imprecise. Given the recent media coverage I suspect what she meant was something along the lines of

You know what would make me happy? Birth control that was included in my private medical plan at no additional cost to me.

As long as we're nitpicking the speech of people in a crowd at a political rally, Romney's response was a bit over-broad. Taken literally, his claim that he was not about "free stuff that you don't have to pay for" could suggest either that he favored fees for any number of government services that currently do not have them. In any event, I don't find myself confused by either of their statements.

Wow.

You are off base in blaming unions for employer healthcare coverage.

That came about because of a government wage freeze for the nation.

Tell that to Old Rocks. After all, "All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance".

"At no additional cost to me". You still don't get it. Your entitlement attitude is so deeply embedded, you can't even understand the implications of what you are saying. If it is given to her at no additional cost to her, then who pays for it? If SHE isn't going to pay for it, that means SOMEONE ELSE has to. Or do you think Susie Smith at the Birth Control Factory makes the Pill for free?

The urge to tell her "We could permanently sterilize you for free. Would that work? Would for me." They he say into the microphone, "Any more questions?"

I would love it if you could provide textual support in my comments for your claim that I don't understand that it costs money to produce birth control pills and that those costs must be borne by someone. I hadn't even said that I felt they should be included on her plan (though I do).

So who would pay for her pills? The principals here seem to be the woman and her medical provider. If the provider suddenly has to start providing her with free pills, it will have to pay for them. Presumably it will do so by some combination of reducing corporate profits and raising its rates, so that the costs fall on its shareholders and its customers.

There is a complicating factor. Some have argued that providing birth control pills will actually reduce medical costs by preventing costly undesired pregnancies. I do not particularly wish to delve into the veracity of this claim in this thread, but I note that the free birth control pills will not necessarily produce a net cost.

Just as not all of those who supported McCain are warmongers, and not all of those who support Santorum, want to ban pornogrpahy, and not all of those who support Romney want Romneycare, not everyone who supports Obama is a freeloader looking for a hand out.

The roads are free?

Doubtful.

This is yet another example of how badly CONZ miss the mark.

He uses someone saying the "roads are free" as "proof" that liberals think someone else pays for everything.

Well, most people don't think about paying for using roads unless it's a toll road. How often do you think about how an elevator works when you get in one?

I don't think people think the roads are "free" merely that they don't have to PAY as a condition of their immediate use.

Now, here's a much more interesting question.
Why should I have to pay the taxes for businesses that USE the public roads.

Now, given that ONLY PEOPLE pay taxes (businesses pass along their taxes as a cost of doing business), we see that business is getting a free ride on everyone else's backs.

Let's say I want to go to the store to buy a loaf of bread.

Now, in order for that loaf to get to the store, the farmer, the wheat transporter, the miller, the bakery and the grocery store ALL include the taxes of all those people and industries who made and used public infrastructure to deliver their goods and services.

Now why should I have to pay the taxes for the company who makes a PROFIT using public roads ?
Business gets to use our public transportation at NO COST to their profits. Yet, I don't hear conservatives complaining about paying someone else way.

THIS is why high top tax rates on high income earners is NECESSARY. It allows the PROFITS made at the expense of ordinary taxpayers to be "redistributed" back to the people who paid for the roads in the first place.

So who would pay for her pills? The principals here seem to be the woman and her medical provider. If the provider suddenly has to start providing her with free pills, it will have to pay for them.

So now you want doctors to pay for her pill out of the goodness of their hearts? And where does this forced generosity stop if we are now providing things which are not medically necessary for free?

Presumably it will do so by some combination of reducing corporate profits and raising its rates, so that the costs fall on its shareholders and its customers.

Ahhhhhh. Those evil corporate profits are standing between this woman and her free pill! I see. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. Indeed!

And she was quite clear she wanted the pill for free. She does not want the cost to fall on her, the customer.
