That's cute, but friendly differences of opinion are only possible where the differences don't have significant consequences. You can't have a friendly difference of opinion with people who want you dead, or your rights cut off, or your wealth transferred to them, etc. The reason I like politics is because they're basically substitutes for blood sport.

Having a formal debate forum on this board would be like putting lipstick on a pig. There aren't enough members here that could actually hang in real argument where soundbytes and insults aren't allowed to make it worth the effort.

The shrillness in the politicized media has gone too far. I think this is a good idea.

Shrillness sells. Angry politix appeal to an otherwise apathetic and complacent population, giving us something to feel passionate and self-important about. Indignance is the new emotional currency, and Americans want emotional stimulation above all. We're numb with disposable culture.

Faced with reasoned, sober discourse, most people just change the channel.
