A classic study reveals that young homophobic men have secret gay urges

What about semi-insignificant partial engorgement? I'm asking for a friend.

What does the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders have to say about so called "homophobia" anyway? Nothing "classic" I'm sure. :eusa_whistle: That's your nouveau PC Poli-Sci (or is it Poli-Psycho science) head shrinker talk for the unhip to be square crowd. If you don't think "Mawage is what bwings us togetha... to be gay" then you must have a mental disorder. Kinda like the Commies locking people up for worshiping any God but the Almighty State.

You know. Or something. Or not.

I think this letter about Pulitzer Prize Winning Conservative Kathleen Parker pretty much sums it up.

I especially liked her answer to this letter:

Columbus, Ohio: Ms. Parker, congratulations on the Pulitzer. I have to agree with the other posters who say they don't always agree with you, but always enjoy reading your thought-provoking columns. I remember several columns you wrote in the 2003-2004 timeframe where you said you love gays, gay humor, your gay hairdresser, gay cousin, gay neighbors, etc., but felt that allowing gay marriage would result in lawsuits against churches and was against the natural order because male/male and female/female orders don't match nature's intentions.

Do you still feel this way or have your feelings evolved over time? I find it hard to say that the relationships of the gay people in my life are not as worthy of legal recognition.

If you have no gay friends or relatives, then why care? But if you do and you promote discrimination, what kind of person are you? Those are the important questions.

Well the trend is heading in the right direction IMO. I'm not that old and it's been only recently that just being gay was taboo all by itself. And more recent still that sodomy was against the law. (thankfully no longer the case, just a couple decades to late) Gay civil unions will happen on a national scale before to long (marriage too perhaps) Gays will openly serve in the military too, also in my lifetime for sure. (all opinion here)

I'm just wary that the pendulum not swing so far as to create a new class people to discriminate against as happens in Europe and Canada. That is, handing out a Scarlet H for a psudo-science diagnosis of what amounts to an opinion. (for such things as preaching a religious belief, supporting a proposition, etc)

It would be interesting to see the questionnaire to get an idea of how the homophobes were selected.

Well, not really.

I'm just thnking it would be easy to pre-select a group more disposed to get a tad turgid watching gay porn.

In this study, 64 self-reported straight males with a mean age of 20.3 years were divided into two groups (“non-homophobic men” and “homophobic men”) on the basis of their scores on a questionnaire measure of aversion to gay males. Here, homophobia was operationally defined as the degree of “dread” experienced when placed in close quarters with a homosexual.

Watching gay porn wasn't part of the "selection" process. When a man comes on to a woman, a "normal" response is to just say "no thanks, I'm not interested". How often, does the woman turn violent, stabs the guy, freaks out, runs away "screaming"? What if it were a "gay woman"? Would she do those things?

No, that's just the response you get.

Here again, a bit of irony in defining a group as "homophobes" in reacting to a so called scientific study. Not for nothing but "operationally defined" is not a term one hears in the (OK, honestly... pun intended) hard science's that are so much more reliable than psycology and psychiatry.

I would think an operational definition, even in the late 90s, might have dealt with political and social attitudes, rather than a vaguely defined "dread."

The study said nothing about hostility toward gays, but the "Hey, no shit" posts in this thread seem to assume this was the prevailing attitude of the selected "phobes."

I agree with all of the above. Just to reiterate I'd add that very little, in the kind of study the OP notes, is other than "vaguely defined".

I would further wager that homophobia, if there is such a thing, effects a tiny fraction of those accused of it. My (non-scientific) opinion would be that .02% of so-called "homophobes" are nothing more than your garden variety assholes. (somebody stop the puns!)

Homophobes pretend not to notice nice puns.

You know, we are the only two guys on this topic for the last half hour plus and we largely agree. Are you gay for me? I'm er, asking for a friend. (?) Damn, that does not work here. Quick, run away!

Reminded of a lame (likely un-PC?) joke. I tell lame jokes when drunk...

Question: How can you tell if your roommate is gay?
Answer: His dick taste like shit.

ta dum tah

How? How can I ignore it once seen? No one has ever sent me a poem so touching. Perhaps my subconscious led me to pick an open mouthed Doc Brown for a reason and my damn phobia would not let me see the light?

I'm so confused.

It wasn't easy rhyming Ragnar, lemme tell ya. Glad you enjoyed it.

I have always assumed that homophobes are protesting too much.

Why else would they obsess about somebody else's sex life?

This just in.... classic study reveals young males get hard when the wind blows.
