A call for community service

Yes, and this Christian thinks it's great that ANY call for helping mankind is a good thing, no matter who is doing it, eh?

No good deed goes unpunished. ;) Actually I don't think using people without awareness and consent is a good thing.

Don't you think it's a good idea to teach awareness to our youth to help others.

The Peace Corps and Habitat for Humanity are two that come to mind off the top of my head.

On the same page as the McChrystal editorial, several others are listed too. You can go to the link to see what they do.

Unfortunately cut from the link are probably the most important points McChrystal made (which is why I posted the whole thing):

At its heart, the real value of national service will be more in the effect service has on those who provide it than the work they provide. There must be some common denominators that form a foundation for the program. As a start, I offer three:

• Service must involve a firm commitment for a specified period of time: at least one year. With few exceptions, that commitment should imply full-time involvement.

• Participants must be paid. The underlying concept of service and sacrifice (and relative inexperience of most young people) should keep compensation modest and relatively equal across the programs.

• The primary incentives for service should be a combination of things like education benefits and hiring preferences (similar to military veterans’ programs).

The existing National Service program not only involves stipends, but education credits for those who put in a specific amount of time.

Totally. I would teach the Good Samaritan too. Teach by example. Make a difference each day.

You are correct! I wonder how many parents try to make a difference in this world, and teach their children the same.

Character is what you do when nobody is looking, but leading by example is a good way to show our youth that helping our fellow humans not only helps them, but they will feel good about themselves too.

Half the people in this country do not even vote! Citizenship although bestown by birth, carries with it some civic duties and respnsibilities such as voting, jury duty, public and volunteer work to name a few. Or as Rockefeller Jr. put it, "every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty"- John D.Rockefeller Jr.

Yet many American citizens do not even do the basic fundemental duty, to vote. So how can we expect them to help their fellow American when they will not even take a few minutes and help select our representatives. Is it that too many people take it for granted?

I got this in my mailbox this morning:

This should be posted in every school or kid's bedroom.
Love him or hate him , he sure hits the nail on the head with this!

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about eleven (11) things they did not and will not learn in school.

He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your self-esteem.
The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school.
You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity.
Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: They called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters.
You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life.
In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop [and bars and computer screens] and go to jobs.

Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

[Emphasis added]

If you can read this... Thank a Teacher.

If you can read this in English... Thank a Soldier!

And for life and everything else you have... Thank God!!
