A-10 evades D.C. foes, back to fight in Iraq
...

And so it begins (or not). SF troops to Syria

Today, the big news is that the White House has authorized not more than 50 Special Operations soldiers (likely Green Berets or SEALs. Maybe Delta) to deploy to Syria to help the forces their in their battle against ISIS aka ISIL aka Islamic State. From the DefenseOne.com story:

“The President has authorized a small complement—fewer than 50—of U.S.Special Operations Forces (SOF) to deploy to northern Syria, where they will help coordinate local ground forces and Coalition efforts to counter ISIL,” the official told Defense One in a statement.

More close air-support A-10 “Warthog” planes are on the way, as are an increase in F-15 fighter jets to Incirlik Airbase in Turkey. A small contingent of A-10s already arrived to Incirlik less than two weeks ago, the Pentagon said on Oct. 20.

Okay. Let’s think about this. We have already got a few thousand “advisers” in Iraq where they are not supposed to be engaged in combat though… one Delta operator was just killed in a firefight which, by any definition, is combat. So So this an escalation or a continuation of the White House’s plan to fight ISIS. Obama never ruled out sending people over there; he just said there would be no combat operations. So what is combat to the White House? From the Washington Post:

As a former driver and loyal fan of the Hogg, it is extremely vulnerable in a radar environment where friendly forces don't have air superiority. Sharing the airspace with BVR capable MiGs gives me cause for great concern.

They will scrap it. It isn't new or shiny, it isn't currently being funded as a project so no one can siphon off funds for themselves and their allies, and it's cheap to operate and maintain so even less money getting diverted.

Every reason for the system as it is to cancel it. 'It works' doesn't enter into it alas.

The Hogg was designed to limp away from encounters with 70's era MANPADS and AAA of 23mm and below. The sky is a lot more lethal than it was 43 years ago when the Hogg took to the air.

The Syrian Air Defense Forces were sporting SA-2, SA-3, SA-5, SA-6, SA-8, SA-10 and SA-11 SAMs and over 4,000 AAA pieces BEFORE the Russians showed up with their hardware which includes S-300s among other goodies.
(Wiki, so take with a huge grain of salt).

50 Troops ?

The media first announced it would be 100 to 150. I would venture they got that number from the a White House or the Pentagon .

So who back peddled and reduced the number ?

Not a place for the Hogg.

But it is the only plane in the US Air Force designed exclusively for CAS...would you rather be in an Apache?

Was you the fellow trying to blow a hill to dust at Fart Hood?

You don't seem to understand the point of my post. Any aircraft, especially an Apache, with a large radar cross section (RCS) doesn't belong anywhere near a high threat radar air-to-air and surface-to-air integrated air defense system (IADS).

You are correct in stating the A-10 is the only inventory aircraft designed exclusively for CAS. I know this well from my time in the aircraft. It's important to also understand the A-10 was not designed to operate in today's highly lethal IADS environment.

There are some great papers on survivability in today's radar threat environment you might find interesting to Google.

A-10's have been deployed in Iraq for over a year. Guess they want more.

Yes. And we control the Iraqi airspace. Apples and oranges compared to Syria.
I suspect that is where the new ones will be deployed with some venturing into northwestern Syria where Russia is not challenging airspace or operating air offensives while the US is supporting the Kurds.

No I completely understand, But following Air Force logic Apaches have no business on the modern battlefield....by the way the A10s have been in theater for about a year with ISIS shooting MANPADS at them in Iraq.

Every reason for the system as it is to cancel it. 'It works' doesn't enter into it alas.
I wonder why this is an USAF craft. One would think the army or marines would operate these. If the AF wants to kill it, can the other branches 'take over'. Somehow the idea that F35s will play every fighter role seems unreal. How many do they plan to make?

You have no idea of the intensity of inter-service rivalries. The infighting over who is supposed to do what with what equipment has probably been going on since George was commanding Continental forces.

Now that the F-35 is in the process of testing its gun capability, it may not be much longer until they are put into operation to replace the good ole Hog.

They all have to share the f35, right? That should help settle some scores.

2017 isn't it? And the Marines are getting it ....but in that case the F-35 replacing the Harrier is way overdue...

A-10s May Stay In Service Longer To Fight ISIS

"Last year, the Air Force said it couldn't send A-10s to Syria because they wouldn't survive, but now the Air Force may delay the campaign to divest the A-10 because the aircraft is performing so well in Syria," Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., said Tuesday, according to Politico.

"Gen. Mark Welsh, the Air Force chief of staff, has said any matchup between the two planes would be a "silly exercise," but last month the Air Force said it was starting to design the tests.

If the F-35 can't provide the close air support needed, the Air Force might need to build a follow-on jet."

And there is the latest ladies and gents. One can't really tell whether it's lack in confidence in the F-35 performing CAS at all or if it's they don't really believe in their time schedule....
