Who else garners so many folks praying in unison? I think prayer in itself is a good thing. When's the last time 80,000 Christians gathered for mass prayer? Or 80,000 of any sect/religion?

I hate all their radical shit but I think this is kinda cool.

I lived many years where the Russian government stopped anything remotely connected to independent thought.

The system in Russia is a lot like USA. Federal Republics and Oblasts mostly decide their own stuff with their own legislation and Parliaments.
There are several Russian Federal Republics which have majority Muslim population and these entities live in harmony within Russian system, but when it comes to International media attention it is always about independence-seeking Ingushets, Dagestanis or some elements within Chechens.
