77 year old, voted every year since '56, refused right to vote - no BC

You know dean, you're making a lot of claims based on what you say you saw on TV.

Exactly how do we know you're not making this all up?

You don't. Time will tell.

The truth is, anyone my age will know it's not only possible, but probably true. In many areas of the US that is poor, many people were delivered by midwives. In some places, even the midwife couldn't read or write. My great grandmother had 11 children. Some were born at her roadside store/house in Virginia. Not all had birth certificates. But everyone knew who they were.

miss crawford , tell us why your mother is one of the lead plaintiffs in this lawsuit.

>> well, thank you for having me. my mother relocated at the end of last year to live with me so that i could provide care. and as we went to change her current photo i.d. , which we just had issued in the state of ohio late last year. so it was current. as we went to convert that to a wisconsin i.d., we were told she had to have a birth certificate . i went home to retrieve a letter that she's had all these years because she had conducted a very thorough search in her original state of birth and they indicated there was none of record. she was born at a time when it wasn't uncommon that the -- they didn't register people of color when they were born. and until she moved to wisconsin , that letter had served fine for her to indicate who she was, but the issue here is that beginning december 23rd is when i found out that she could not get the i.d. at the department of motor vehicles . i began the search process then for our upcoming april 3rd election. and i have here --

Plaintiffs challenges Act 23 under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits any voting standard, practice or procedure that results in denial or abridgment procedures of the rights of citizens to vote on account of race or color.

Then she was not telling the truth. It is impossible to live and get along without being able to prove who you are. You cant cash checks, work (unless you are from Mexico) apply for benefits of any type, go to collage (unless you are from Mexico) enroll your kids in school (unless you are from Mexico), so in short, its bullshit.
She has an ID card from her prior state of residence. Most places allow affidavits in lieu of photo ID. If not, the woman is being denied the right to vote.

Bullshit. She needs a birth certificate in order to vote. We're supposed to take her word that " where she was born, most black people her age didn't have Birth Certificates"? What the fuck does that mean? Did they lose their birth certificates? Were they never given birth certificates? What hospital doesn't give brith certificates? She should still be able to go back to her home state and find some kind of record.

Not so.

I don't have a birth certificate with my name on it--my parents hadn't decided on my name--and I have been eligible to vote in every election since I became of age.

PS: Being profane doesn't help your stance.

Expect more of these cases and an eventual revisit of voter ID laws with the SCOTUS. The door of the SCOTUS ruling on the Indiana voter ID law was left open for cases exactly like these...documented incidents of voter disenfranchisement as a direct result of too restrictive ID laws.

You do not have to be a citizen of the US to cash checks, go to (sic) collage or enroll your kids in school. You do have to have ID.

What people need to understand is that Mexican citizens come in to the US every single day. They have businesses here, they shop, they spend huge amount of money. And, they go home (to Mexico) every night.

Don't believe me? Drive around the parking lots of the Costcos in Tucson on any day. Check out the license plates. Mexican citizens bring a huge amount of money into the US every single day.

Or they stay in the US - legally.

In spite of the hooey the R's force feed you you really cannot get most (welfare) benefits if you are not a citizen.

As for the op, this is exactly what the R's want - stop those who are likely to vote Dem.

in border towns.....not inland.....

its a good thing you said MOST Welfare Benefits....because they do get them....in spite of the HOOEY of the Left who claim they dont....

I just saw this breaking news story on TV about a 77 year old mother who moved to another state to live with her daughter. She had been voting every election since 1956. She had a brand new ID card from her home state but her new state wouldn't accept it as proof and state law said she must have a Birth Certificate. She said that where she was born, most black people her age didn't have Birth Certificates.

Her daughter said they filed a lawsuit.

Haven't found any other stories about this. It will be interesting to see what happens.

On the same show, they showed a Wisconsin Republican committing voter fraud:

No, they said she had a letter from the state saying they had no birth certificates on record for anyone in a certain area before a certain date. The daughter said her mother used that letter every time she went to get an ID.

How old are you? People older than me sometimes have a very hard time getting past info because there were no computers. Things were done by hand. Many states kept records stacked in cardboard boxes in old warehouses. My cousin's school burned down and the only proof she even went to school was her old torn and tattered diploma.

Old enough to know that the ID she had from another state and a social security card would have gotten her an ID in the other state. It is not impossible to establish who you are. You have to be able to do that to get anything done in this country.

attaining minimal documentation can be such an overwhelming task for "progressives"....

it can be all soooooooooooooooooo confusing and demanding, like a palm beach ballot

perhaps helpless idiocy shouldnt be rewarded with the right to vote

Its a fake issue used by both sides to herd the sheep where they need to be in November. Its a pretty stupid one to. No one is so stupid that they cant get a state ID card. Maybe to lazy, but not to stupid. I know a fellow with downsyndrome who manages to do it just fine.

Tell you what... for EVERY anecdotal one time situation that you just shared which is what YOU people tend to do is make exaggeration, EXCEPTIONAL i.e. (does NOT happen often in case you don't know that word..) there are dozens of DEAD people on voter registration rolls VOTING!
The report found that there are about 1.8 million dead people listed as active voters.

I am 68. Only twice in my life have I been asked for a birth certificate. This whole thing is just another way the GOP is attempting to deny Americans the right to vote.

I call Bull shit. You cant convince me in 56 years that this man has never had an ID or DL .. You have to have one to have a checking account, to get alcohol , get a plane ticket and many other things. You Dems have more excuses. The only reason you dont want people to have IDS to vote so you can have illegals, dead people , and others to vote so you can steal an election!

Are the aforementioned "states" names being kept secret for some reason?

Na, she is either to lazy to get what she needs to vote, or is a political operative manufacturing a situation in an attempt to get on the news. Obviously, she failed because its just more fodder on a political message board.
