75% of Oklahoma high school students can't name first president

Let's invite the federal government to takeover health care. They've done such a bang up job involving themselves in the education of our young.

Except, you know, education policy is set by the states.

History here is taught by coaches, Civics isn't taught at all. and no the Fed rules and regs take precedence over state regs.

Yes, where they exist. The entire point is very few exist. In fact, I can't think of any outside of special education.

75% of the folks here think McCain got elected and that Obama is a secret half-Muslim starting guard for the LA Clippers.

Tell the truth, Garyd. The right wing churches "take precedence over state regs." OK is the only state that mandates that every classrom hangs a picture of Jeus cuddling a baby dinosaur. Sooner or later the tribes in the SE of the state are going to go on the war path and bring the state under the control Wankan Tanka.

Ever heard of No Child Left Behind? Education policy USED to be set by the states.

Even NCLB is under the control of the states. The bill does two things. It makes schools a data collector for military recruiters, which really doesn't have anything to do with education policy. It also sets some funding rules based on test results. But guess who writes the test? That's right, each state writes their own tests.

I have not yet met a teacher that doesn't think that NCLB is intrusive and is making their jobs more difficult. We can pretend that NCLB is under the control of the sole control of the states, but the actuality is that the hand on the wallet sets the agenda.

The funds the federal government controls are the funds they provide, which is a very small percentage of education funding.

First of all, is anyone saying that Washington being the first president HASN'T been taught to these kids?

Second of all, most teenagers retain what is only relevant to them. Explain to them how dead presidents are relevant to them. Go on. I wish you luck.
