'72 Dolphins: undisputed best team ever

No matter what sport you take the most recent teams are always going to be more athletic and would probably beat the older teams but take the records and teams in perspective. No one beat the '72 Dophins, everybody else was beaten at least once.

Here is another example: The greatest NBA basketball player ever was not Michael Jordan but Oscar Robertson! Michael won so many championships because he had a team and a great coach. Oscar Robertson is the only player to ever Average a triple double the whole season and he almost did it twice!

And he's a home grown Indiana man!

Coached in High School by Ray Crowe, one of the greatest high school coaches ever!

He never won a National Championship while he played for Cinnci tho. :(

Sorry dude, but greatness is not defined merely by personal statistics.

Michael Jordan would put his nuts on Oscar Robertson's head.

He never fouled out of a game either. Amazing!

The Colts should have gone undefeated last year, but they pulled their starters against the Jets, thus sending the Jets to the play-offs, only to beat them there.

The fans here in Indy were PISSED OFF that they didn't try to go undefeated for the season.

Oh well.

What. The fuck. Ever.

Colts got owned by the Saints. No excuses. I didn't make excuses for the 2007 Patriots when they lost their shot at infamy, and they only lost by 3.

Peyton's a choke artist. Get over it.

Manning's pick-6 was a thing of beauty.

1972 Dophins, the only NFL team to ever to win the NFL Championship without losing a game all season. There can be no aurgument that any other team was better; '78 Steelers lost 2 games, '07 NE lost the big one (choke!), '85 Bears lost to Marino, '98 Broncos lost 2 games. Every team that won a championship tasted defeat except the '72 Dolphins.

Sure the teams today under todays rules might beat those Dolphins but the fact remains, Miami 17-0!!!

The Roman Empire was pretty great, too.

Dead and gone.

yeah they would have gone undefeated during the regular season if they hadnt done that,no question about that.It turns out it didnt really matter that they lost though since they couldnt win the ultimate game, the superbowl. The Dolphins said back then if they did not win the superbowl, then going undefeated that whole year was meaningless to them.

I would say that The Patriots are everybit as good as The Dolphins were back in 72 as the best team ever because The Dolphins only played a 14 game schedule back then where The Patriots played a 16 game schedule. The Dolphins went 17-0 where The Patriots went 18-0,one game better. I was glad The Colts did not win the superbowl against The Saints. They did not deserve it since they did not play to win that game against The Jets.

I think the 0-16 Detroit would beat the 1972 Dolphin team as well as winning the Super Bowl. Guys these days are bigger, stronger, faster and the offenses and defenses are more complex.

Best team of all-time is hands-down, without question, absolutely, positively, undeniably the 85 Bears.

The defense was the greatest D the gridiron has ever seen. The 46 Defense was devastating and Buddy Ryan had some of the best defensive players the game has ever seen to implement it to perfection. The defense gave offenses absolute nightmares. They simply took over and dominated games.

And on offense they simply had the greatest running back to ever step onto a field. Sweetness is the bar all running backs are compared against. He was the just the best ever.

If the 85 Bears and the 72 Dolphins were to play each other I would bet every penny of my retirement and savings on the Monsters of the Midway and not even sweat the outcome because it would be in the bag.

The 85 Bears were that fucking good.

yeah thats a good point. What a lot of people dont know about the 72 Dolphins is that there were a couple of games they won that year where they were just lucky to win those games. They only won it because there were like two games where the other team fumbled the ball deep in their endzone which allowed the dolphins to come back and win the game and another one where they were behind as well but came back because the other team fumbled the ball on the kickoff towards the end of the game.

Apples and Oranges

72 Dolphins were a bunch of overachievers and had an easy schedule.

Better teams

Steelers of the 70s
85 Bears
49er teams of the late 80s
Patriots

I agree with those who have pointed out how much the games have changed. The athletes overall are stronger and faster, and the game has really been elevated to a different level than it was back in '72. There's good and bad to that, I suppose, but I think the '72 Dolphins, or any team from 1972, would have a hard time against any of the teams in the NFL today.

The 1972 USC Trojans would have defeated the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

Could lap them in team speed.

72 Dolphins were SLOW.

Still recall old-man Jack Pardee of the Skins running down Csonka.

The 72 USC Trojans could lap both those teams

If the 72 Raiders hadn't been eleiminated by the Immaculate Reception vs the Steelers - THEY would have goneon to win the Super Bowl - not he Dolphins.

Remember the 72 Dolphins as being savy overacheiviers but S-L-O-W................................

But faster than the FOSSIL Redskins with Jack Pardee, Billy Kimer etc

Sure there were a lot of great teams over time and today's teams would probably demolish the old teams yet the record stands. There has only been one undefeated team that won a championship and that is the '72 Dolphins. Everybody else got beat by another team!!! How can you say any other team had a better season than all wins and no losses. Until someone else comes along and goes undefeated and wins the super bowl Miami is at the top of the list.

17-0
