This article from the Washington Post framed the debate between utilities, who expect it to create an 11-23% increase in electricity prices and to cost the industry $180 billion, and the EPA which says that the plant closings will save $290 billion per year in health-related costs by 2014. Both of these figures are probably inflated, but really - the entire federal pricetag for Medicare and Medicaid for 2010 was $793 billion - we're going to save 40% of that total by closing coal plants?
