UN Secretary-General: Syrian Bloodshed Unacceptable and Intolerable
May 07, 2012 > U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday that the 14-months of violence in Syria that has claimed more than 9,000 lives is an unacceptable and intolerable situation. Mr. Ban made the remarks during an appearance in Washington.

Ban called the conflict in Syria the most serious and gravest concern of the international community. The secretary-general said his priority is to fully deploy a mission of 300 unarmed U.N. monitors for a ceasefire that so far has failed to end the bloodshed. “The cessation of violence must stop by all the parties - government, the military forces or opposition forces. This should be stopped. Then political dialog must begin in an inclusive way for a political resolution reflecting the genuine aspirations of the Syrian people," he said.

There are about 60 U.N. monitors in Syria. Ban said about 300 personnel will be deployed by the end of this month. He added that the United Nations is mobilizing humanitarian efforts to help those displaced by the fighting. “At least 1 million in Syria have been displaced and affected. Tens of thousands of people have fled to neighboring countries," he said. The U.N. Secretary-General said the League of Arab States is playing a crucial role and that it, along with the U.N. Security Council, is united in trying to deploy a monitoring mission to Syria.

Ban attended the forum at the Center for Strategic and International Studies to report on the U.N.’s peace building efforts. He said $100 million were spent last year to help keep war torn societies from sliding back into conflict. “Our peacekeeping missions are often important early peace builders, as we saw in Sierra Leone, still we see in Liberia and hope to see in Southern Sudan, where our peacekeeping mission probably has the most ambitious peace building mandate ever adopted by the Security Council," he said. Ban said including women in peace processes and post-conflict planning is crucial to achieve positive results.

Zionist-dominated mainstream media vividly portrays Israel as a tiny embattled nation seeking peace in a sea of Arab hostility. Arabs, we are told, commit acts of terror while Israel only resorts to violence out of self-protection. The facts of history paint a very different picture.

Far from deploring terror, Israel has sanctioned terror to seize and expand its territory since its beginnings. In 1944, Zionist leaders in Israel faced two alternatives. They could continue to allow the British and Arabs to occupy Palestine , who would continue to pressure Israel to concede a Palestinian state. Or they could drive both British and Arabs out. Israelis chose the latter.

Members of the Zionist ruling elite and their clandestine terrorist enforcers--the Jewish Agency, Hagana, Irgun and the Stern Gang--began to exert every possible terrorist means to dominate Palestine . Their strategy was simple: the more respectable Zionist establishment would take the "high road" and officially disavow terrorism. Meanwhile, Zionist terrorists would commit any crime needed to disrupt British occupation and to panic Arabs into flight. The Encyclopedia of the Palestine Problem, available in most university libraries, documents from British records more than five hundred violent or terrorist incidents against Palestinians and the British occupation between 1939 and 1948. These included bombings, booby traps and landmines, kidnappings and torture of prisoners, bank robberies, murders of Arabs, and assassinations of police and British officials.

• Deir Yassin massacre, April 9, 1948 . Begin’s Irgun soldiers killed 250 sleeping Arab villagers at Deir Yassin, a suburb of Jerusalem . • Assassination of UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte, September 17, 1948 . This killing by the Stern Gang was on orders of Shamir. Purpose: To sabotage UN efforts to create a Palestinian state.

• Massacre at Dawayma, October 29, 1948 . Israeli soldiers killed between 80 and 100 men, women, and children in Dawayma, a suburb of Haifa . Purpose: Intensify terror generated by Deir Yassin and compel the remaining Palestinians to leave Israel.

• Massacre at Kibya, October 14, 1953 . In an atrocity condoned by the highest levels of the Israeli government and military, Ariel Sharon led 700 crack paratroopers to attack the Jordanian town of Kibya . They slaughtered 75 innocent men, women, and children primarily by locking families in their homes and blowing them up. 12 Purpose: Collective punishment to avenge the alleged killing of a single Jewish family.

• Massacre of Kafr Kassim, October 29, 1956 . 51 men, women, and children were murdered by Israeli troops as they returned to their villages in the evening after work. 13 more were severely wounded by the gunfire. Purpose: Terrorize Palestinians into not siding with Egypt in case of war.

• Massacre of USS Liberty, June 8, 1967 . Israel 's jet fighters and torpedo boats repeatedly attempted to sink US intelligence monitoring vessel USS Liberty during the 1967 Israel/Egypt war. They killed 34 and wounded 171 American sailors. Purpose: Minister of Defense Moshe Dayan ordered the attack ostensibly to protect Israel 's intelligence communications, even though the war was virtually over.

• Libyan airliner massacre, February 21, 1973 . Straying over Israeli-controlled Sinai air space, a Libyan 727 commercial airliner was intercepted by Israeli fighters and, despite the clearest identification, shot down, killing 106. Purpose: Flexing Zionist power against Libya .

• Massacre in Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, Beirut , Lebanon , September 23, 1982 . Gen. What About Arab Terrorism?

I have also written about one of the greatest atrocities Israel still indulges in: the systematic and fiendish torture of many thousands of Palestinian prisoners, incarcerated, most without trial, in Israeli prisons.

After leaders of the Third Reich committed atrocities against the Jews during World War II, they were tried, hanged and buried, both physically and under the contempt of humanity. The opposite happened to the bloody and arrogant terrorists of Israel. Ben-Gurion, Begin, Shamir, and Sharon were all elected to leadership of the nation. UN observers have counted at least 90 bodies, including 32 children, after a Syrian government attack on a town. UN mission head Maj-Gen Robert Mood told the BBC the killing in Houla was "indiscriminate and unforgivable". UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would seek a strong international response to the "appalling crime" - France and the Arab League have also condemned the massacre. Syria's government has blamed the deaths on "armed terrorist gangs". This is one of the bloodiest attacks in one area since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011.

Activists say some of the victims died by shelling, while others were summarily executed, or butchered by the regime militia known as the "shabiha". France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and the Arab League also condemned Friday's assault. Mr Fabius said he was making immediate arrangements for a Paris meeting of the Friends of Syria group, which includes Western and Arab nations, but not Russia or China, who have blocked previous attempts to introduce UN sanctions. Fighting in Syria has continued despite the deployment of some 250 UN observers monitoring a cease-fire brokered by UN envoy Kofi Annan - a ceasefire which the BBC's Jim Muir in neighbouring Lebanon says is now "pretty fictional". The UN says at least 10,000 have been killed since the protests began.

UN 'refused to come'

Mr Hague said he would be calling for an urgent session of the UN Security Council in the coming days. Arab League head Nabil al-Arabi called the assault a "horrific crime" and urged the Security Council to "stop the escalation of killing and violence by armed gangs and government military forces," the Reuters news agency reports. The opposition Free Syrian Army says it can no longer commit to the ceasefire unless the Security Council can ensure that civilians are protected, the AFP news agency reports. Horrific video footage has emerged from Houla of dozens of dead children, covered in blood, their arms and legs strewn over one another. It is unverified, but our correspondent says such images would be difficult to fake. International media cannot report freely in Syria and it is impossible to verify reports of violence.

A team of UN observers visited the town on Saturday and afterwards Maj-Gen Mood said they could confirm "the use of small arms, machine gun, artillery and tanks." But he did not say who was behind the killings. "Whoever started, whoever responded, and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence should be held responsible." Our correspondent says local people are angry that the observers failed to intervene to stop the killing. Abu Emad, speaking from Houla, said their appeals to the monitors failed to produce action. "We told them at night, we called seven of them. We told them the massacre is being committed right now at Houla by the mercenaries of this regime and they just refused to come and stop the massacre."

Houla, in the central province of Homs, came under sustained bombardment by the Syrian army after demonstrations on Friday. Activists say some of the victims died by shelling, while others were summarily executed by the regime militia known as the "shabiha".

'Flagrant violation'

The killings have sparked a chorus of international condemnation. The EU, Arab League, France, Britain and Germany all expressed shock over the incident and called for an intensification of pressure on the Assad government, while the UN demanded that Syria stop using heavy weapons in populated areas. Britain was consulting with its allies on a "strong international response" and was calling for an urgent meeting of the Security Council in the coming days, Mr Hague said. "Our urgent priority is to establish a full account of this appalling crime and to move swiftly to ensure that those responsible are identified and held to account," he said. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan said the attack - one of the bloodiest episodes since the uprising began - was a "flagrant violation of international law".

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called it an "appalling" massacre, saying President Bashar al-Assad's "rule by murder and fear must come to an end". In a statement on Saturday, Mrs Clinton called the deaths an "atrocity" and said Washington would increase pressure on "Assad and his cronies", who she said must give up power. "Those who perpetrated this atrocity must be identified and held to account," she added. France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said he was making immediate arrangements for a Paris meeting of the Friends of Syria group, which includes Western and Arab nations, but not Russia or China, who have blocked previous attempts to introduce UN sanctions. The EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also condemned the incident.

Mr Ban and Mr Annan said the crime involved "indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force" and violated commitments by Syria's government. In April, Damascus pledged to implement a six-point plan brokered by Mr Annan, including a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weaponry from urban areas. Meanwhile, the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA) said it could no longer commit to the ceasefire unless the Security Council could ensure that civilians are protected. In a statement, the FSA said that if urgent steps were not taken, then Mr Annan's plan was "going to hell", AFP reports. It said killings in Syria were taking place "under the eyes of the UN observers," and called on states to "announce the failure of the Annan plan."

Political analyst Ibrahim Alloush told RT that the way the attack was done and its timing “make it obvious” that Damascus is not responsible.
“These crimes have come at a point when a political solution has slated for the Syrian question, and these people do not want to see a political solution – instead they want to see an armed intervention, an international foreign intervention in Syria under pretext of massacres,” he concluded.

“One should ask: cui prodest (who profits?),” she stressed. “Massacres happen right before either a Security Council meeting, like in the February Homs massacre, or before or during Kofi Annan’s visits, or after some military defeats. Therefore it seems to me almost impossible that government could order or give a green light to it.”
