I got to spend some time with the police officer who was in charge of the search and recovery, they really should make a movie of the event.

One of only three Cat 5 hurricanes to make landfall in the US. But the Gulf coast got just part of the show. The real show occurred after Camille became a tropical depression in the Ohio Valley.

Residents of Nelson County Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains slept soundly since the forecast was just for showers as the remains of Camille passed over. But what happened was a Cold front hit Camille as it passed over and unleashed the unbelievable. In an estimated 3 hours some areas of the County saw 31” of rainfall. The National Weather Service said it was "the probable maximum rainfall which meteorologists compute to be theoretically possible."

What occurred was the rainfall just gouged out huge sections of mountain sides, burying everything below.
