5 reasons Republicans shot down an international treaty to protect the disabled

The treaty, already signed by 155 nations and ratified by 126 countries, including Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, states that nations should strive to assure that the disabled enjoy the same rights and fundamental freedoms as their fellow citizens. Republicans objected to taking up a treaty during the lame-duck session of the Congress and warned that the treaty could pose a threat to U.S. national sovereignty.
“It really isn’t controversial,” Kerry, D-Mass., said. “What this treaty says is very simple. It just says that you can’t discriminate against the disabled. It says that other countries have to do what we did 22 years ago when we set the example for the world and passed the Americans with Disabilities Act.”

God forbid now the disabled visiting other countries has no rights. You village idiots had better stay home.

Idiot... we already have laws for the disabled, protecting the disabled, giving access to the disabled...

What good does it do to give the UN authority over it?? A: To bow to the UN, nothing more

Now... go fuck yourself

Why in the fuck doesn't the UN go to Syria and do something about human rights there?

One of the few good things Bush did was refusing to sign the Koyoto Accord, developed with the blessing and urging of the UN. Most western nations are suffering because of their signitures on that treeaty.

The UN was established in the 50s as an anti-US body. Don't believe me? Remember that it was established during the cold war we had with Russia. How many votes does the US get? How many votes does Russia get?

Look it up, educate yourself. The UN has always been anti-US, and recently Anti-Israel. Nothing good comes out of any decision by the UN.

Indeed look it up. 1945. We were one of the founding memebers.

Fear the UN much?

History of the United Nations Charter

WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED
• to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
• to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and
• to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and
• to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

I had a suspicion that it was the 40s but I wasn't sure, so I said 50s. Meh, insignificant, it still occurred during US/Russia hostilities.

Yes, THAT UN.

The United Nations is an atavistic, anachronistic abomination.

It squats on prime New York real estate. It should be located in Mali or Burkina Faso.

It should go the way of the dodo.

Have you read the treaty? If not you can't intellegently comment on it. It requries member nations to allow disabled people to immigrate that have no means of caring for themselves. It also requires member nations to conduct studies and make reports that require money and man power, is it really worth borrowing 42% of every dollar to pay for it? I say no.

At the time and through all the talks leading up to the formation of the UN we were in fact allies with them. But you are correct in a sense that the General Assembly is not Pro-America, but the power of the UN is in the SC, not the GA.

The one formed in the 50's or the 40's?

The Human Right Council is elected by the General Assembly. What power do they hold that you are so afraid of again?

The powers that ones like Obama want to give them with the adoption of resolutions or 'treaties' such as this... as stated, this move does NOTHING except give the fucking UN power over our sovereign nation

".....former Attorney General and Pennsylvania Gov. Richard Thornburgh, who was President George H. W. Bush’s point man on the Americans With Disabilities Act in 1990.

The treaty, Thornburgh said Monday, would cede “no authority to the U.N. over the U.S. or any of its citizens. None. Zero.” He said the U.N. committee’s recommendations would be purely advisory and could not require the United States to change its laws or pass new ones and would not create any legal rights in state or federal courts.

The treaty was negotiated under President George W. Bush ....."

Yeah... OK

And I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn...

You let a governing organization get its hands in, it will use its influence...

And I don't care if it was negotiated under the observation of the ghost of George Fucking Washington.. I would still stand against it and any action that puts the UN influence or 'power' over anything within our country

Yet, it creates an international committee that all member states have to report to on a regular basis. The people are sovereign, the government should be answering to the people, not an unelected committee of bureaucrats.

5 reasons Republicans shot down an international treaty to protect the disabled

A proposal that is simply an extension of the Americans with Disabilities Act failed — thanks to fringe conspiracy theories
By Ryu Spaeth | December 5, 2012
John McCain and John Kerry voted to protect the rights of people with disabilities. Not all of their Senate colleagues agreed.
Arguably, Senate Republicans were more swayed by former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.), who earlier in the week gave an impassioned speech calling on senators to vote "nay." So what were the GOP's objections to the treaty?

As critics of these naysayers point out, there is no evidence to support any of these claims.

WTF? The same Santorum who has a severely disabled child?

The fact is that the treaty IS NOT shot down. It will go on with the nations that signed it.

Looks like another in a long unbroken succession of LilOlady thread failures.
