42% of Democrats are in Favor of Socialism

Despite all the nuttiness in the GOP, this is a big reason why I'm a Republican.

Many Democrats are feeling the love for socialism.

More than four in 10 Democrats say they have a favorable opinion of socialism, according to a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults released in January by data and research firm YouGov; this percentage is nearly identical to what the researchers found in May of last year. Meanwhile, only about one in three say they have an unfavorable opinion of the ideology. ...

On the whole, nearly half of all Americans say they have an unfavorable opinion of socialism, the YouGov survey revealed.

It could be that Democrats are just more honest about it. When you look at the subsidies and bailouts that go to large corporations, or the nanny-government-patent-protection of private investments, or the military defense of global trade routes and Exxon's mideast oil fields, or the criminally low rates that allows supposedly free market entities to address liquidity issues through the fed discount window . . . you realize that all this bluster about socialism is coming from people who have enjoyed a very nice ride from Uncle Sucker. Or, maybe look at the amount of money that pours from the Pentagon budget into Boeing (whose investors have enjoyed a nice ride on Uncle Sucker's back) And let's not talk about the drug companies or all the other parasites who complain about socialism while sitting beneath the immense teat of no-bid Washington contracts. And let's not talk about all the private institutions who - under no compunction from Government - participated in the most corrupt securities and derivatives market in the history, leading to the largest financial meltdown in our lifetime, after which the world's most powerful free market institutions had to be bailed out by the taxpayer. And we won't mention FDIC Insurance or the immensely expensive legal system that protects private property (which extends to contract enforcement or anything where an interest is at stake),enabling the high volume of profitable transactions.

And we won't mention things like satellite technology which flowed from the state sector (Cold War Pentagon and NASA) into the profit margins of several industries, telecom chief among them.

Point is: government & business have always been closely tied together. If government didn't exist, Wall Street would invent it as a bogus holding to shelter itself from losses.

The current volume of profit makers in the modern Southwest would not exist without things like the Hoover Dam. Tell me this: which collection of businesses had the capital requirements to fund the Hoover Dam at that time? And while you're at it, research the Tennessee Valley Authority which built dams, power plants, power lines and provided low-cost, reliable electricity across industries. We don't even need to talk about roads, bridges or snow removal, and their value to the market.

This nation - every nation - socializes a huge portion of the costs / risks of business. It is virtually impossible to overestimate the value of industrial infrastructure or the stabilization of markets through monetary policy - moreover, if these things were appropriately priced, we'd have the money to invest in education and health care from those left behind when our noble capitalists shifted production to more profitable labor markets living beneath freedom-hating tyrannies in Asia and the global south.

Regardless, the whole point of the Reagan Revolution was to condition the population not to see what government does for business. This was done to minimize any actual or implied obligations arising from the market's sizable dependence on the deep pockets of Washington. The belief that only democrats support socialism is part of a massive information gap on the Right, which is maintained by an extremely powerful network of Think Tanks and media assets.

Spot on.

It is very difficult for average people to think of billions of dollars of government gifts as socialism, but that is exactly what subsidies and no-bid contracts are. The F-35 project will cost 100 million dollars per aircraft RIGHT NOW. The costs continue to rise.

For one fighter.

The defense contractors are part of the biggest make-work welfare programs in human history. The Pentagon goes to Congress and says "we don't need all these extra tanks, but because the tank maker is in some Republican's district he insists they spend the money and take the tanks anyway.

The Republicans and the defense industry are socialists that take trillions from society.

It is criminal on a scale not to be believed.

Uncle Sam gives a nice ride to us? Nice way to sum up how the socialists govern.

Sorry try again

And btw you are a capitalist since you charge a fee for a service in order to make a profit

No, I am a tradesman selling my own labor as an independent contractor. NOw, if someone else did the work and I collected the money, then I would be a parasite if I wasn't paying them a fair share.

Independent contractors are capitalists just not successful ones.

And you still fail to realize that everyone who chooses to sell their labor for money are also capitalists

That's all any laborer does you know

SO tell me what do potential employees do ?

They apply for a job then convince the employer their labor is worth more than anyone else's labor they then negotiate a price for that labor along with a benefit package etc.

They are selling their labor and time for an agreed upon price in order to make a profit for themselves. The employees are the sole owner of the means of producing and delivering that labor hence they are capitalists.

Wow, that's probalby the worst case of Conservative Stockholm Syndrome I've ever seen.

Of course, when I ask for what I consider a fair price for something, why, I'm just like the Koch Brothers spending 400 million to buy politicians to rig the game in their favor!!!!
