30 and Over~

speaking of HBO, I used to love the opening presentation to a movie!

YouTube - HBO Feature Presentation 80's

Then you turn the volume WAY down when it says "The following movie is rated R. It is intended for mature audiences. HBO will show this film only at night."
you remember watching this on HBO. Man I wished the show was still on. I think I might have to buy the DVD for my *cough* son.

sure do

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking Twenty-five miles to school every morning

Uphill... barefoot...

BOTH ways

Yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up,
there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it
and how easy they've got it!

But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today...

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!

And I hate to say it but you kids today you
don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, We had to go to the damn library and
look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write
somebody a letter, with a pen!

Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! No where was safe!

There were no MP3' s or Napsters! You wanted to
steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!

There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished and the tape would come undone cause that's how we rolled dig?

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you
were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either!
When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school,
your mom, your boss, your Bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you
just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video
games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games
like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You
actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or
screens, it was just one screen
forever!

And you could never win. The game just kept getting
harder and harder and
faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was
on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off
your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel! There was no
Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons
on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK
for cartoons, you spoiled
little kids !

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat
something up we had to use the stove ... Imagine that!

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids
today have got it too easy.
You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted
five minutes back in 1980 or before !

The good ole days. :) I wouldn't trade for being younger. Overall, I think kids today are spoiled and ungrateful.

My generation invented all that stuff.

My mom was raised in the coast range, no running water, no electricity. She had to go to boarding school because the roads were impassable during the winter, and in the summers she drove a team to prepare the garden patch, and to clear fields.

Myself, I bought my OWN horse at 11, started babysitting even younger than that, had to bicycle my own ass the 10 miles (each way) to see my horse on the weekends I wasn't working, and walked 2 miles to school because I liked to meet my friend halfway and walk with her.

I was stunned when my boys went through a stage where they tried to say they couldn't walk anywhere. I put the kabosh to that, and they learned to walk, believe me.

And even when I moved to where I'm at, a TINY town where I can see the houses the furthest away, and even my horses are only a mile away, I had a 13 y.o. girl who had to be driven between her house and mine to watch my kids...it was about 1/4 of a mile.

Okay, gotta go. Got to give a riding lesson, tootles.

How about waiting for "The Wizard of Oz" or "The Sound of Music" or "It's a Wonder Life" to come on TV once a year...It was a MAJOR event in our household back before the advent of VCRs!

I still managed to see wizard of oz at least ten times.

I have it on Blu-ray, digitally remastered with new color and 7.1 Dolby digital, DTS HD, surround. It's simply amazing seeing it on Blu-ray. The detail... the sound... it's like seeing it again for the first time.

I see I'm not the oldest person to post in this thread, but maybe the second. I remember once I was grounded and told I had to go to my room. Well it was summer and I could see the other kids outside playing and having fun. It got to me so bad that I told my mother it was "torture." I must have pulled at her heart with that comment because she relented and let me go outside. See that was the worst punishment a kid could get back in the '60's and 70's... sent to your room. Now, it's just the opposite. You can't get kids out of their rooms. They have their computer in there, their cell phone, their TV, their game station, their DVD player, and on and on. It's their own little world. Now it's torture to them to tell them to go outside and play. Hell, what's outside? Their world is in their room. What an amazing change in such a short time span. I wanted to be outside all day and all night if I could. I loved it outside and still do. Kids today couldn't care less about being outside. We had to use our imagination to think up ways to entertain ourselves. We thought up our own games. We were inventive, creative, and we were in excellent shape from being active all day. Today's kids have an epidemic of morbid obesity from their sedentary lifestyle. They need exercise. My son is 31 years old, and he wears the same waist size as I do, and I'm 54. When I was his age I was still in the Air Force and I had six pack abs and could run and never have to stop. I've never had a sit down job in my entire life. My son has a desk job. I wouldn't be surprised if I outlived my son. Kids today...

I'm glad I'm as old as I am. I liked it back in the day, and I don't like the way things are changing. I think it's for the worse. People are getting lazy, intolerant, unsocial and unhealthy. The world is losing it's moral compass. I figure I'll be all but too ready to check out when it's my time to go.

I've never heard of a kerosene TV???

Google it. You'll find it listed right there along with the left-handed fork which is only used in very high class dining establishments.

I'm a lefty. Where can I get one? Do you realize how many modern day conveniences are made for right handed people? A simple can opener for instance... no not an electric one... the ones you had to turn the damned wing nut thingamajee while holding the handle. Not easy to do left handed. Scissors. Most are shaped for right handed people and can be uncomfortable for the lefty. I hated working on cars because it always seemed like the bolts were angled for someone who was right handed... okay, that wasn't the main reason I hated working on cars, but it is true, getting your hands in there was a pain in the butt.

Today's kids are spoiled and pampered and to be honest I feel sorry for them. I can't imagine trying to grow up in today's world. I prefer Bone's world where it was safe to let your kids out the door. Today's world, while filled with unimaginable luxuries, is also filled with perverts and types of violence that were unheard of back in the day. What's really sad to me is that our kids don't even realize the freedoms they missed out on and I think that lets them be more accepting of what the federal government has been doing.

An interesting thread. I could have picked a lot of posts to quote, but this 1 sort of spoke to me.

In a lot of ways I wish I had been born 50, 100 or 200 years ago or more. I think every generation has it's own challenges... it's own privileges... and it's own problems. I was sort of lucky growing up in rural Kansas, I think in some ways I got the best of both worlds. We had a lot of the modern conveniences with a lot of what I like about previous generations. We did have some stuff that would probably appall you older folks, but it didn't seem like a big deal to us, we'd seen worse on the TV.

To me it's a lot like social class. Every class has it's problems and it's perks. I can appreciate what other generations had/put up with and all I ask in return is to understand that even with so many so-called amenities growing up in my time has been no cake walk. Walking through a metal detector every day is a sobering reminder of what your fellow student could do at any moment. I never worried about nukes, but I did wonder who was packing any given day, and that was not just some delusional idea brought on by the media, every family I knew had guns. It wasn't a stretch at all to think someone could bring Daddy's pistol to school. Think about that. Are today's kids really living the good life when they know they could be taken out at any time? Nostalgia is nice, But everyone faces unique challenges. No 1 has had it any better than any 1 else.

The greatest change that I have noticed is the fact that if you allowed your children to go outside and play around the neighborhood, the greatest concern was that they might miss dinner.......not the next time that you might see them would be in a shallow unmarked grave because some pervert was allowed to go though the pragmatic system that we now call justice, as he/she simply where hit in the ass as the door revolved around them and was not satisfied with masturbating to the internet porn that was downloaded at the school library, as their civil liberties are far to valuable to have depressed, by public opinion. Or you did not have to dead bolt, chain lock, key lock, set your alarm in order to walk to the corner grocery, as you could leave your door unlocked as your neighbors whom actually spoke to you, would kind'a keep an eye on your property for you.

People call this BEING progressive....I call it regression when anyone declares themselves to be only animals with animal needs.

Damn it! I was getting comfy on that nail to. ;)

This is exactly what's going on, too many people watching the news and not enough paying attention to those around them. Get to know your fucking neighbors people, it's that simple, you have a greater chance of being hit by lightening than your child has of being abducted.

Those really aren't good enough odds for those of us with children, KK. I know somebody who was hit by lightning.

you can say what you want about michael moore but in Bowling for Columbine I think he was right on with what the media role is. It is all about ratings and drama sales. Prime example is Halloween and shark attacks. People think way too much about the bad things that can happen now.
There were always child molestors, it isn't like it is a new thing.

You missed the point. Lightening cannot be avoided if it wants to hit you, and there is no way to predict it's strikes, but it's still a lot lower than say getting hit by a car, it's lower than dying of cancer, it's lower than almost everything. If you take the total number of people in your area, divide by about 1,000,000,000 then you have the risk of your children being approached by a dangerous person. However, if you also teach your children important rules when dealing with strangers (like never get into their car) you reduce their chances of a stranger hurting them to almost nothing. Almost all child abductions and sexual crimes are committed by those they know, friends of the family, and mostly their own family. So the fear of the "dark stranger in the shadows hurting them" is unfounded.

Nor is there an increase in the percentage of the population. Actually in the US the percentage of people who are child molesters is much lower than 50 years ago.

Aaaaaahh I don't know... I don't think I'm too inclined to agree with you two. I think the internet being, in great portion, all PORN, and the kids of today LIVING on the internet, they think nothing of it. Young girls want to dress like a whore at an earlier age every decade. Bare bellies hanging out, pants waistlines keep getting lower and lower, tramp stamp tattoos on their back sides, low cut tops showing their cleavage. Go to the mall, look around. If girls dressed like that back in my day they'd have been sent home to their mama, in shame. They take pictures of themselves with their phones and then send them to each other, little girls kissing, groping each other, showing private parts, naked, and the boys aren't any better. This whole thing is centered around and driven by the ever available smut and porn on the internet, and morals are in decay. No, I think there are more perverts today than there was years ago. A lot more. And the sad thing is, with the coming of tolerance to homosexuals and their agenda, some may disagree, but I believe the next big push from those people will be for the acceptance of pedophilia. Things aren't staying the same... things are getting worse.

True.

I think there might even be less child molesters now. Because molested kids are much more likely to speak up about it now than they would in the past. And parents are more likely to help their kid get over it nowadays.

I read somewhere that children are less likely to be scarred by sexual molestation if their caretakers react in a positive way, tell the child it's not their fault and take action against the molester. In the past it was often something to be ashamed off and not spoken about and even ignored if the molester was a member or friend of the family, which it usually is.

Kids are becoming sexual being at a younger age. One of the effects of better nutrition. Or maybe estrogen in milk from cows that have been fed bovine growth hormone or the other additives some people think are causing girls to start menstruating earlier.

Teens always try to push the limits on things. I bet you shocked a few adults as a teen.

homosexuals will never push for pedohilia to be accepted especially giving the fact there are more "heterosexual" pedophiles than there is "homosexual" pedophiles. For one pedophilia is usually considered it's own sexual orientation. One thing that is still true is that more men molest girls than they do boys. I don't Nambla is going to become an actual group that is accepted anytime soon.
